2010 CONFERENCE COMMUNIQUE

NIGERIA @ 50 LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE COMMUNIQUE

The communiqué issued at the end of a two day Nigeria @ 50 Leadership Conference titled:
Leadership for Transformation: Empowering the Generation Next organized by
Guardians Of The Nation International(GOTNI) in collaboration with the Federal
Ministry of Youth Development and supported by Ondo state government and Federal
Ministry of Information and Communication.

The youths of Nigeria represented from all the states of the Federation including the FCT after
an intensive two day leadership learning experience and serious deliberations on the challenges
facing youth development and leadership in Nigeria and in consideration of the strategic
importance of youth involvement in the on-going democratic process in Nigeria resolve as
follows:

1. To support and ensure the successful implementation of the one man one vote initiative
of the Federal Government.
2. To strongly resist the engagement and luring of ignorant youths by desperate politicians
into acts of electoral violence, thuggery and electoral malpractices.
3. To partner with GOTNI and ensure that a pre-election public debate is held where all
presidential aspirants will present their programme and showcase their plan of action for
overall national development.

In furtherance to ensuring a proactive youth participation in the on-going democratic

process, Nigerian youths also demand the following:

1. That any person(s) caught or found culpable in any act of electoral malpractices such as
rigging, ballot stealing is/are to be made to face the full wrath of the law. To this end, the
National Assembly should begin the process of enacting a bill to deal with electoral
malpractice offenders/perpetrators.

2. That the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should work with EFCC
and the law courts to ensure that persons of questionable character be disqualified from
contesting elections at all levels.

3. That since sound education is the bedrock of a truly developed nation, the Federal
Government should adopt and implement the prescribed 26% budgetary allocation to
education by UNESCO for African countries commencing from the 2011 budget and
ensure its judicious utilization.
4. In the same vein, the Federal Government should partner with GOTNI to establish a
National Leadership Institute in the six (6) Geopolitical zones of the country and
immediately commission the Federal Ministry of Education to put together a curriculum
of leadership development from the Primary schools to the Tertiary Institutions in the
Country.
