STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON ACTION BY THE

SENATE ON THE 9/11 HEALTH AND COMPENSATION ACT

“Today’s bipartisan approval of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act
by the United States Senate affirms our nation’s commitment to protecting those who protect us
all. The events of that day were an attack on America by a foreign enemy, and addressing its
health impacts is a national duty.

“I would like to express my deep appreciation to Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten
Gillibrand, who never stopped working on behalf of this bill and negotiated changes without
which this could not have become a reality. I also want to thank Majority Leader Reid and
Minority Leader McConnell for their efforts to win unanimous consent on this bill. Additionally,
we would not be where we are today without the hard work of so many others who are too many
to name, but include Representatives Maloney, King, and Nadler; responders, survivors, and
their family members; labor and civic leaders; and great New Yorkers like Rudy Giuliani and
Jon Stewart.

“I am hopeful that the House will take this up quickly, and that it can be delivered to the
President’s desk for his signature, so the responders and survivors of the attack can be assured
that they can get treatment for their illnesses.

“As we look forward to the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, I am
encouraged that our elected representatives in Washington came together and stood by those who
were there for America in its hour of greatest need.”
