TOPIC 11:

MANAGEMENT IN
CYTOLOGY LABORATORY
Introduction
• Management is a crucial issue in every work
place.
• In cytology laboratory, likewise all other
laboratory in the Department of Pathology, there
are organizational structure that been develop
to assure the effectiveness of the laboratory.
• Position in the organizational structure required
the person in charge to monitor and make sure
that the task are perform based on SOP
provided in every laboratory.
• The organizational chart can be learnt during
internship.
The purposes

• to observe the efficiency of the laboratory


• as prove of QA implementation
• smoothen the workflow in the laboratory
• recorded all procedure as a backup if
there is medico-legal case or investigation
of accident that happened.
Several elements in management
of Cytology Laboratory

• management of staff,
• management of workflow,
• management of daily operation,
• management of safety
• and management of quality.
Management of Staff:

• Match the qualification with the position.


• Reshuffle the staff in order to make them
expert to do all laboratory tests and to
tackle the issue of boredom if work at the
same laboratory section for the whole life.
• Organize the issue of leave, quit, being
promoted/transferred and absenteeism.
• Plan the time for staff to take part in CME.
Management of Workflow:

• Provide SOP in the laboratory.


• Lodging (record & label) Macroscopic (if
necessary) Preparation for microscopic
(fixationstainingmountinglabeling)
screening (microscopic) Result.
Management of Daily Operation:

• Observe that work should start at stipulated working


hour.
• Make sure that results are produced according on TAT
• *TAT- turn around time; the specified duration given to
the laboratory in order to produce the result.
• Make sure report the result immediately for STAT /
URGENT / TAT /WAIT specimens.
• Make sure that machine is calibrated as scheduled to
prevent false result.
• Make sure that wastage is discharge appropriately.
Management of Safety

• Assure that all staff has the basic safety


knowledge.
• Assure that there are representative from
the laboratory as a Safety Committee
member.
• Assure that there are first aid kit and
personal safety equipment in the
laboratory.
• Make sure all reagents are well labeled.
