Preterite Conjugation Simplified

A summary sheet by Sr. Jordan

The verbs in this sheet are changed in the

following order:
yo nosotros
tú vosotros The preterite is a past tense in Spanish.
él / ella / usted ellos / ellas / ustedes It is used for completed actions.
Ex:
Yo cociné la pizza.
I cooked the pizza.
or I [started and finished cooking] the pizza.
verbos regulares:

hablar (to talk, speak)

verbos irregulares en el ‘yo’
-AR hablé hablamos tocar (to play [instrument], touch)
hablaste hablasteis toqué tocamos
habló hablaron -CAR tocaste tocasteis otros verbos comunes:
tocó tocaron buscar, practicar, sacar
comer (to eat)
-ER comí comimos jugar (to play [game])
comiste comisteis jugué jugamos

vivir (to live)

Verbos irregulars en tercera persona

When the ‘i’ is between two vowels, it becomes shy an turns into a ‘y’

creer (to think, believe)

creí creímos huir (to flee)

creyó creyeron caerse (to fall down)

*Notice that these verbs all have accents on the ‘i' in

the yo, tú, nosotros, vosotros forms. *Notice that these verbs only have accents on
the ‘i' in the yo form.

*haber in the present tense is hay (there is/ there
are). In the past tense, we most often use ‘hubo’
