GENERAL DESCRIPTION The PACO Model C-25 "In-Clzeutt”” Capacitor Tester is one of the most valuible time-saving, trouble. shooting instruments on the service bench, It instantly reveals open or shorted capacitors without ‘removing them from the circuit, Walso discloses dricd-out electrolytics as well as shorted or open electrclytics by di- rectly indicating actual capacitance, In one quick test without removing the eapucitor from the clreult ~ by virtue of the exclusive PACO Capacity Dial (GENERAL, KIT CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION INTRODUCTION ‘The PACO Jit you have just purchased 1s 2 high quality instrument and when assembled and used in ac~ cordance with the instructions in this manual, will provide many years of trouble-free service. Therefore the first, and we feel, most valuable advice we can offer in this manual is that you work carefully and patiently. By 80 dding, you will experience more satisfaction in your new instrument, and greater confidence in your ability THR MANUAL ‘We suggest that you spend a Utile time NOW and read Sls entire manual thoroughly before starting the actual construction of the kit. This will familigrize you with the conterts and the general procedure to be fol Towed, ‘The step-by-step Instructions will help you assemble the instrument with « minlmum possibility of error Further assistanee may be gained from using the larger folded-in diagrams supplied with this marcal. ‘These are enlargements of the smaller size figures referred to in the step-by-step instructions, They should be at tacted io some way to the wall above your work bench for greater ease in reference. We advise you to keep this manual after the kit has been constructed, for future assistance in the use and maintenance af your PACO instrument, UNPACKING We cannot stress too strongly the need for exercising care throughout these instructions. This is espe- cially true now as you unpack the kit. Parts may easily become damaged through carelessness here, Do not throw any packing materials away until all parts are accounted for. Hach part should be checked against the parts list at the back of the manual in order to make certain all parts are present and are correct as to value and type. The color code chart at the back of this manual will assist you In ideatifying doubtful parts, Please notify us promptly if any shortage or erraneous part is discovered. Return the inspection slip with your letter 4m order to expedite the handling. Keep in mind however, that minor differences in some parts do not indicate an error, A .05MED capacitor for example, may sometinios be found in the kit where a .047MFD ts called for the parts list. Such sUastitutione are checked carefully before they are made, ard you can be assured they w work satisfactorily, The registration care which accompanies each PACO kit, MUST be filled in and returned to the company Immediately after purchase. Our warranty applies only to registered instrin ‘TOOLS REQUIRED FOR ASSEMBLY tion of PACO iis - a good quality soldering tron with asmall tip (50 or 60 watts); a pair of torg-nose pliers; a pair of diagonal or side-cutzing pliers; a small as: sortment of screwdrivers, and a few small end: wreaches or a smali adjustable wrench. An inexpen- sive wire stripper, shown in figure 2, is most helpful for removing insulation from wires, Figure 2. Wire Stripper ASSEMBLY AND WIRING ‘The position of wires and parts in this instrument 1s quite critical in some cases, and changes may affect the operation, Fellow the diagrams closely and you should encounter littie, if any difficulty, for the layout has hheea thoroughly prechocked and tested for best results. ‘When wirlng, remove only about 1/4 inch of insulation {rom the ends of hock-up wire, Exeessive removal of insulation may result in the exposed wire shorting to nearby terminals or wiring, If the wine has a brown, faked eramel coating (transformer leads for example} be sure to scrape the eramel off, with sandpaper or a Knife, to expose the Copper wire before making 2 terminal connection. Leads on parts (resistors, capacitor: ete.) 'should be trimmed to proper length before mounting. Do not cut leads too short! All parts shoud fit be- tween the designated polnts without strain, SOLDER - SOLDERING IRON ~ SOLDERING General Wo wish to emphasize the importance of proper s ence tn soldering, we suggest you spend some Hme prai before doing any Suldering gn your kit technique, If you have had clog with an old tube socket an tle oF no experi some Scraps of wire Solder 2 60/40 atloy of tn and lead (60 percent tin and 40 percent tead). A rosin flux is provided in the solder, usuaily as a single ox meitiple core. ‘The roain in the core flows even ets, Only good quality radio ard television type rosin-core must be used. ALL GUARANTEES ARF VOIDED AND WE WILL NOT REPAIR OR SERVICE ANY PACO, INSTRUMENTS IN WHICH ACID CORE SOLDER OR PASTY FLUX HAS BEEN USED. To remove ary dovdt about your solder, we suggest you make cert the solder you buy 18 clearly labeled “Tor radio and television use" Soldering Iron ‘The soldering iron transfers the correct amount of heat to a Zunctton or terminal, so that the solder wi2l flow smoothly, producing a good mechanical and electrical bond. Soldering trons can be grouped into the barrel types, the gun and trigger heat types, andthe pencil types. The choice of eoldering tron 1s a personal one and 4s usually bused on previous experience. ‘The barrel type is the most commen of the three types. The Up of this trow can be changed to mateh the soldering operation, For the soldering reguired in the construction of this kit a small diameter tip is best. A wattage rating of 60 fo 125 watts, which 19 the most widely used in radio and television work, 18 more than adequate. Copper Tips ‘The copper soldering tip requires @ certain amount of upkeep because of corrosion and pitting The 6 kosion is a black scale (Cupric oxide) that is produced wher copper is heated tn the presence of air The pitting 1s caused by the copper in the ‘ep alloying with the solder The oxide coating or seale can be brushed or seraped from the tp. than the metailie copper. When the tip is left in the barre! of . nis oxide will form: and will cause the Up te bied in the barrel. The tip should ve remaved per todicaliy ad cleaned, Pitted copper seldering tips can be remedied only by some of the metal This is accomplished by filing or grinding the pitted area untiLa smooth, clean surface is exposed. ‘The tip ‘8 then heated to the tem~ perature at which the solder begins to melt, Solder is then reobed aver the efeaned surface until it adheres and spreads over al! of the cleaned area Sometimes the copper oxidizos rapidly and prevents easy tinning. When this occurs, a piece of steel woo! should be used to wipe the eurface. A heavy piece of cloth cai Sold 1% The actual process of soldering is more be soldered should be heated with the soldering iz actually flow across the metat surface. Keep in mind that solder will ct Slow smoothly into a comection urless the joint itself has been heated enough to melt the solder, Unless this is done, "cold" soider or "high resistance” joints often result, (See figure 3.) Note that “cole” sulder jciuts have a “dull” and "yraisy™ appearance. A good older connection will present # smooth and “shiny” appearance, Other causes of "cold" soider jolnts are poor meckanfeal connections; melting drops of solder on the Joint with te ron: leads and wires not sufficiently cleaned of dirt, wax, and cor= Pasion; and moving Jeacs before “set” or hardened. When in doubt as to the condition of a joint it may be teated by moving the Leads slightly ard observing whether they are loose. Loose leads indicate a “cold! connection. When correcting cold solder condition, aways apply new solder. Asa rule, simply reheating a soint will not de the Job. just sticking some selder tou piece of metal, ‘The metal to on, then the rosin care solder is applied. The solder should ‘To oblain a good seléer connection, follow the dixcetions given below carefully 1. Heid the tron agatust the terminal to heat the metals belne joined. A amall amount of solder may be placed on the tip of the tron to aié in heat trarsfer, Do not lead the tip with solder ~~ it will just roll off into the equipment. 2, When the temperature of the junction reaches the melting point of the solder, the solder on the iron will begin to flow away from the iron and Into the junction. Apply more solder at this time. ‘The amount depends tupon the size of the function, Apply only enough solder to make a good electrical and mechanical bond. Do rot cover the wires and terminals with excessive amounts of solder, 3. The iron should be left on the junction only until the solder has flowed to all of the surfaces. A large soldering tron will quickly "sweat" the solder into the function, A smaller iron will require a Little more ttme. Do not try to rub the solder into the termina, instead, hold the iron in one place, If the terminal does not solder completely, if may be necessary to move the iron to another point, SP WRONG WHOM HRN Examples of Good Soldering Make a Good Mechanical Cex Junction NOT Too Much Sider Figere 8.
