Dear Student –

As part of an effort to improve wireless Internet access in residence

halls, the Office of Information Technologies (OIT) is asking students
who have wireless-enabled printers to disable wireless in these printers
or turn these devices off when they are not in use.

We have determined that wireless-enabled printers work best in home and

office settings and are not designed for environments with large-scale
wireless installations, such as campus residence halls.

The wireless signals transmitted by these devices significantly

interfere with and degrade the performance of the campus wireless
network, making Internet access slower for you and for your neighbors
and friends.

Many of these printers come with wireless enabled by default. As a

result, they still transmit wireless radio signals, even though they
cannot connect to the UMass Amherst wireless network.

Please consult your printer’s manual or the manufacturer’s Web site for
instructions on disabling wireless. If you cannot disable wireless, we
hope that you will turn off your printer when it is not in use.

If you need help, please contact the OIT Help Desk

(413-545-9400 | A109 LGRC LR | 8:30 am – 5:00 pm | M–F).

We appreciate your help making wireless Internet access in residence

halls better for everyone.

Sincerely,

Pat Kochin
