Lab 2 - Subnetting

Equipment: 2 PCs, switch

Work in pairs. Disconnect the PCs from the lab LAN and connect them to the switch. Set the
IP addresses of the PCs to one of the following pairs (your instructor will tell you which to
use):

Group IP 1 IP 2
1 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.2
2 192.168.1.5 192.168.1.6
3 192.168.1.9 192.168.1.10
4 192.168.1.13 192.168.1.14
5 192.168.1.17 192.168.1.18
6 192.168.1.21 192.168.1.22
7 192.168.1.25 192.168.1.26
8 192.168.1.29 192.168.1.30

with the default subnet mask for the IP address assigned. Verify that you can ping between
the PCs.

Connect your switch to a neighbouring group's switch and verify that you can ping between
the PCs in the two groups.

Change the subnet mask on each of the PCs to 255.255.255.252, and again ping between
the PCs within a group and between groups. Explain why the inter-group ping no longer
works. What is the biggest subnet mask value that will permit inter-group pings?

Remember to restore all original settings and connections when you are finished.

Use ipconfig in the command window and note the IP address and subnet mask of the
ethernet interface and the IP address of a PC in Lab 305, a PC in Lab 303, a PC in the LRC and
in one of the Killeshin Centre classrooms. In the LRC find someone using a laptop computer
and ask them to run the command for you, this time noting the details for the wireless
interface.

For each set of details obtained work out the range of IP addresses in the subnet. Also
provide a discussion of the subnetting structure of IT Carlow’s network
