Nestled between Los Angeles to the
south and Santa Barbara to the north,
Ventura County offers the best that

Ventura County is home to the Santa
Monica Mountains National Recreation

Forest, and Channel Islands National Park,
where whale-watching and other trips to
the islands offer unique opportunities to
explore nature at its wildest.

VENTURA COUNTY
Ventura County offers some of the
best weather in the nation and scenes
right out of an oil painting, whether at the
beach, among the farmlands or in its many
hillsides.
With the Channel Islands popping up
through the Pacific Ocean, the Santa
Monica Mountains providing hiking
and biking, Los Padres National Forest
stretching across the back country, and the
agriculturally rich Santa Clara River and
Ojai valleys and the Oxnard Plain growing
some of the nation’s best produce, Ventura
County is one of the best places in the
nation to live.
Los Angeles is close by for those
seeking big city entertainment, but the
Civic Arts Plaza in Thousand Oaks,
Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center and the
Rubicon Theatre Co. in Ventura offer
world-class entertainment locally. And
Santa Barbara is less than an hour away
on Highway 101.
Ventura County was formed from Santa
Barbara County on Jan. 1, 1873, after
action by the state Legislature on March
22, 1872.
The county seat is Ventura (officially
San Buenaventura). Because county
government provides a wide range of
services, including public and mental
health and welfare programs, it has offices
in many communities.
The county has 42 miles of coastline,
7.48 miles of public beaches and 411 acres
of state beach parks.

Camarillo
Camarillo is situated in a central
location along Highway 101. The city was
incorporated in 1964 and continues to
grow, with future development planned in
the western part of the city.
Within the city is the redeveloped Old
Town area, which is south of the freeway
and east of the popular Camarillo Premium
Outlets. The city is currently working on
Camarillo Commons, a redevelopment
project that would incorporate shops,
restaurants and housing.
The city has allotted $50 million for 28
capital projects in the 2010-11 fiscal year.
Major projects include the Springville
Interchange, a new northbound off-ramp
at Highway 101 and Las Posas Road, and
construction of solar panels at the city’s
corporation yard.
Camarillo is surrounded by farmland and
is near CSU Channel Islands, the only four-
year state university in Ventura County.

Sitting in the heart of the Santa Clara
River Valley, Fillmore boasts a tourist train,

Moorpark is a small town with character.
For years, it was a rural community where
you could see cows in the hills when you
drove down Spring Road.
Now, it houses some of the county’s
largest employers and Moorpark College,
which offers the Exotic Animal Training
and Management program. It also is home
to Moorpark High School, which has won
several U.S. Academic Decathlon titles.
But it’s still the kind of place where you
know the people at the grocery store.
Residents also say the weather is cooler
than in neighboring valleys, and a good
place for views is Monte Vista Nature Park.

Ojai
The beauty of Ojai has always appealed across the globe. The Ojai Valley has fine

Its strange-sounding name comes
from the family that developed one of
the city’s first industries, a sugar-beet
refinery. Oxnard, the county’s largest
city, offers coastal beauty and small-town
atmosphere, and is surrounded by some
of the richest agricultural land in the world.
It has a variety of business parks and
shopping areas, including The Esplanade.
The city is home to Oxnard College
and the county-operated Channel Islands
Harbor, a gateway to the Channel Islands.
Outlook Magazine ranked Oxnard
among the California cities most suitable
for relocating a business, with its local
labor force and transportation links.
Oxnard residents are proud of the city’s
downtown Heritage Square, which has
more than a dozen restored or replica

Located on the eastern edge of Ventura
County and encircled by hills, Simi Valley
is a haven from the congestion of the San
Fernando Valley and Los Angeles County.

from the San Fernando Valley, say the

Simi Valley is consistently rated one of

Property taxes are collected by the
Ventura County treasurer-tax collector
based on assessments made by the county
assessor, and then distributed to local
agencies. County secured property taxes
can be paid in two installments due Nov. 1
and Feb. 1 and are delinquent after Dec.
10 and April 10, respectively. If taxes are
not paid by June 30, the property becomes
defaulted. If taxes go unpaid for five years,
the county sells the property at auction.
Tax bills are mailed on or before Nov. 1.
Property owners who don’t get a bill by
Nov. 10 should call the tax collector’s
public service department at 654-3744. If
your taxes are paid through an impound
account as part of a mortgage payment,
you should receive an informational copy of
the bill. Supplemental tax bills, based on re-
assessments of sold property and property
improvements, are mailed throughout the
year and go directly to the owner, not to
lenders. Appeals of regular assessments
must be filed between July 2 and Nov.

1. Big Sycamore-to-the-Sea: An
8-mile ride from Rancho Sierra Vista
in Newbury Park to the ocean via Point
Mugu State Park. It’s a relatively easy
hike or mountain bike ride. One tip: Have
a vehicle ready to drive you back to
Newbury Park from the ocean.
2. Ojai Valley Trail: An easy, 18-mile
round-trip from the beach in Ventura to
Libbey Park in Ojai, along Highway 33.
A post-and-rail wood fence separates
the wood-chip bridle path for horseback
riders from the paved bike and pedestrian
portion of the trail.
3. Ventura Coastal Bikeway: An
easy, nearly level, 25-mile round-trip
along the ocean from San Buenaventura
State Beach in Ventura to Hobson County
Beach near Seacliff.
Top hiking trails
1. Punch Bowl: This 6.5-mile hike
up Santa Paula Canyon trail in Los
Padres National Forest is one of the most
popular in the county, but it has changed
in recent years.
The 2005 floods wiped out most of the
trails there so what is left is a meandering
trail that is not well marked. If you ever
find yourself getting lost, just follow Santa
Paula Creek downstream and it will take
you back to Highway 150. The rewards
can be worth it, though — a 360-degree
view of the Punch Bowl, a picturesque
waterfall, deep swimming hole and
forested canyon trail. The hike starts at
the entrance to Thomas Aquinas College
on Highway 150.
2. Backbone Trail: From beautiful
ocean views to shady, tree-covered trails,
the Backbone Trail that winds through
the Santa Monica Mountains in Ventura
and Los Angeles counties offers the
best of Southern California hiking. The
five separate hikes that make up this
challenging journey range from moderate
strolls to strenuous climbs.
3. Rocky Peak Park: A 4.6-mile hike
on the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park
District’s Hummingbird Trail features

Park, three lighted courts at Pitts Ranch
Park and three lighted courts at Springville

SURFING, FISHING AND HUNTING
Top surfing areas
1. County Line, just north of Malibu and
south of Point Mugu, at the line separating
Ventura and Los Angeles counties. A big-
wave surfing area. Park on Pacific Coast
Highway. Hike down embankment to access.
2. Silver Strand, a beach break in
Oxnard, is noted for its good-shaped waves
and ease of access. Former home of Tim
Curran, a top professional surfer.
3. Surfers Point also called C Street,
near Seaside Park, is a top longboard
surfing area. A long wave can get big on
swell directions from the north and the west. lakecasitas.info.
There’s a small parking lot facing part of
the area; otherwise be prepared to pay for

4. Emma Wood State Beach, one of
the northernmost surfing breaks in Ventura
County, is a favorite among all types of
surfers, from beginners to advanced. The
forgiving wave is good to learn on.
5. Rincon Point, about 20 minutes north
of Ventura, is known worldwide as one of
the best surfing spots on the California
