One of the primary responsibilities as a student designer at the Art Institute of

Phoenix was to execute several poster designs that communicated information to
the student body. This particular poster showcases an ability to properly and
elegantly use space and typography with no supporting images.

downtown Phoenix. The logo concept was to create a mark
of downtown Phoenix. The logo concept was to create a mark that that emphasized the
double ‘H’ acronym with the roof over the mark to signify the house conversion that
is Hanoi House. The logo mark also indicates a virtual Asian character. Along with
the logo, a menu, table tent promoting the reverse happy hour, and three print
advertisements are included in this campaign.

Your Wasabi is Lonely

Brash Magazine is a raw, hard-edged, New York based publication. This is not the kind of
publication you would find at your neighborhood grocer. This issue features a spread on actress
Juliette Lewis, yet focuses on her musical career. The cover is comprised of several Polaroids of
women indicating to the reader of the issue’s focus on women. The Polaroid idea was a design
element to show the rawness of the magazine, but also was the solution to a low budget.

She has been acting since the age of six and has temporarily put her acting on hiatus
to pursue a music career. Lewis was born in Los Angeles, California to Geoffrey Lewis,
an actor, and Glenis Duggan Batley, a graphic designer. She has four siblings – brothers
Lightfield and Peter, and sisters Dierdre and Brandy. She has appeared in over forty films
and made-for-TV movies. She appeared in The Wonder Years as Wayne’s girlfriend in
Episodes 24, 34 and 36. She played a rock singer in the film Strange Days, doing her
own singing on covers of two songs written by PJ Harvey, giving fans an early look at
her musical prowess.

others, Juliette “delivered sonically varnished
melodic punk replete with purring vocals and lyrics that
bash porn, pharmaceutical companies and rotten lovers.”
Lewis has also appeared on three tracks by Electronic
Music group The Prodigy’s 2004 CD Always Outnumbered,
Never Outgunned. In 2006, Blender magazine included her
in their hottest women of rock music. Lewis dated actor
Brad Pitt and co-starred with him in the films Kalifornia
and Too Young to Die?. She also dated Michael Dewitt, the
nanny employed by musicians Kurt Cobain and Courtney
Love. She married professional skateboarder Steve Berra in
1999; they divorced in 2005.
The Licks became a reality when Juliette accompanied
Patty Schemel (Hole) to a Blondie concert and found
herself staring at fate. She became instantly inspired by
the “live” element of the show and knew it was her calling.
Juliette began to reach out to everyone she knew to find
musicians to accompany herself and Patty and soon, she
found what she was looking for. The Licks became: Juliette
(vocals), Patty Schemel (drums), Todd Morse (guitar) and
Paul Ill (bass). “Todd Morse (H20) is not only an amazing
songwriter but a perfect punk-rock rhythm guitarist,” says
Juliette. “Paul Ill I’ve nicknamed ‘Professor Ill’ because he
can reference anything from Faces to Black Sabbath to the
Police.” Juliette and the Licks released their first EP …Like
a Bolt of Lightning, in 2004, which was shortly followed
by the release of their debut album You’re Speaking M y
Language. The album spawned their most successfu
av l s i n g l e“You’re S p e a k i n g M y L a n g u a g e ”, and the l e s s
successful, disco influenced “Got Love to Kill”. The released
version of the second single was a remix of the original
song, which had a more rock influence. Morris left the band
before sessions for the 2nd album had begun. The Licks then
recruited Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl to fill the gap.
Grohl then went on to ask the Licks to be a guest act at the
Foo Fighters sell out Hyde Park performance on the 17 June
2006 to around 85,000 people (other acts were Angels &
Airwaves, Queens of the Stone Age and Motörhead). At the
same event, Lewis and Moa Holmsten from Meldrum came
on stage for one of Motörhead’s songs to do backing vocals.
After their performance at Hyde Park, their second album
Four on the Floor, was released in late 2006. “Hot Kiss”
which was one of the Licks’ most successful singles, was the
first release from the album, though the following single,
“Sticky Honey”, proved less commercially successful. With
the release of their second album, Juliette and the Licks
went on tour in late 2006 in America and many parts of
Europe. They once opened for Muse, and Chris Cornell.
Juliette Lewis wanted to act since she was six years

Is Bleeding, and as opposite Brad Pitt in Kalifornia. In 1993
she acted alongside Leonardo Dicaprio and Johnny Depp
in the drama film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. She played
Mallory Knox in Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers. She
played a rock singer in the film Strange Days, doing her

Black Bear Micro-Brew Coffee is a little DIY brand based out of Hoboken, New
Jersey. With a Do It Yourself brand philosophy I had no choice but to dig deep
into my punk rock past of making cut and paste flyers at a local Kinko’s. The
concept of the package is screen printed on cardboard and folded similarly to a
carton of milk. The coffee bean or grounds are bagged and placed inside.
