and is, is an inescapable sense, the history not only of the present
but of that which is contemporaneously judged to be important in the
present”.

Historically, the most common material
for making furniture has been wood, but
other materials, such as metal and stone,
have also been used. Furniture designs
have reflected the fashion of every era
from ancient times to the present.
Whereas in most periods a single style
dominated, a wide variety of old and new
styles influences current design. Some of
the most highly prized pieces of furniture
used in contemporary homes, however, are
ANTIQUES – pieces anywhere from 50 to
300 or more years old.

The five items pictured and

shown in the preceding slide was

taken from my grandparents’

house.

It was a two-storey ancestral

house which was built on the

1940’s. For almost 70 years, it

An c es t ral House
has sturdily stood with minor

changes in the interior and

repainted once in a while.

The Ancient Sewing Machine
… The Ancient Sewing
Machine

This traditional sewing machine was

about 50 years old. It stands about 3-4
feet tall, made of a wooden table-like top
and metal sewing machinery and stand.

Although it is not functioning already,

the family had preserved its sentimental
value.

According to old folks, this sewing

machine was used by my grandmother to
stitch, hem, or embroider clothes such as
shirts and shorts for my aunts and
uncles, her children, in the old times. It
functions by pedaling the foot-treadle
and the thread makes the stitches.
… The Ancient Sewing
Machine

According to history, this

sewing machine was given to
my grandmother as a gift
because of her passion in
sewing. No one in the family
could exactly remember its
origin.

All over the years, the

sewing machine was never
repositioned in the house
because it was believed
that my grandmother
preferred it to be in that
place where it is near the
window facing the street.
The Crafty Painting and Its
Antiquated Frame
… The Crafty Painting and Its Antiquated
Frame

When I first saw this portrait, I was

fascinated by how refine the painting
was that it looks like it has been
photographed. Suddenly I remembered
that in the olden times, there was no
camera that could create a colored-
imagery.

This frame hangs freely on the wall

and as what I’ve said at first glance,
one could say that it looked like it was
a camera-shot picture.

The two persons are my grandparents

on my mother’s side. My mother said
that this portrait was painted during
their first wedding when my
grandparents were still young.
… The Crafty Painting and Its Antiquated
Frame
The painting was made on a canvas. It has a wooden
frame with dimensions of approximately 2 feet by 1 ½
feet (L x W).

Based on reliable sources, it was made sometime in the

1950’s. No one in the family could exactly remember
how it was made since my aunts and uncles were not yet
born on those years.
The Fancy Old Cabinet
… The Fancy Old Cabinet

This cabinet with a mirror on the

anterior stands about 5’6’’ tall. On first
glance it doesn’t look antique because
generally the whole structure is still
intact except for some scratches on
the mirror and cracks on the lower side
of the cabinet. Inside, there were
three partitions.

Based on history, this cabinet existed

sometime from 1958-1960. My mother’s
older sister said that this was brought
by my grandmother from the “mercado”
because of its elegance in those times.
The lock and key was just placed in the
1990’s where my grandmother usually
placed her valuable items.
… The Fancy Old Cabinet

This was the only movable antique

cabinet in the entire house and
most dressers were built-in on
walls.

All over the years, this cabinet

has a sentimental value for the
family and was preserved and
kept intact. When my
grandmother was still alive, they
say this was her favorite cabinet
and would not exchange it for a
new one.

Until now, as what I’ve said

earlier, this still contains her
stuffs and clothes.
The Vintage Chairs
… The Vintage
Chairs
When the house was built, these
chairs were also created. For that
fact, these chairs are as old as
the house itself.

I was astonished on how durable

these seats were that for the
very long years, these things were
still in the house used by the
occupants.

It really looked antique, made of

wood and nylon-like strings. The
nylon-like strings do not really
provide much cushion in the butt
and back when one sits. But
somehow, better than on chairs
made up of entirely wood.
… The Vintage
Chairs

There were four single chairs of this

type and there was a long one that
could accommodate 4-5 persons.
Although only 2 of the single chairs
and the long one are used in the
living room until the present time.

This set of furniture existed on the

old times as also evidenced by some
pictures of my aunts and uncles
seated on these chairs when they
were still young.
The Outdated Wooden Bed
… The Outdated Wooden
Bed
This single wooden bed had been in the house
since the 1970’s. It is made up of bamboo slates
and wood approximately 5-6 feet in length and 2-
2 ½ feet in width. It stands about 1-1 ½ feet tall.

According to old folks, the bed was

made by a local carpenter or what
they call a “panday”.

During the old years, this was used

by the children without any
mattress on it. It was only during
the 1980’s that a mattress was
used for comfort and cushion.

This was the only outdated bed

left in the house. It remained
untouched by the family and was
never used for 20 years now.
