ZERO CARBON BRITAIN 2030

A free copy of the new CAT report “Zero Carbon Britain 2030” has been presented to
TL2 by the Chief Executive of Climate Change Wales.

It is a substantial document, technical and comprehensive, setting out a clear plan and
options for reducing Britain’s net carbon output to zero over the next twenty years. This
is achievable by a combination of reduction in energy usage, 100% sustainable energy
production and carbon sequestration.

This is an attempt to summarise very briefly what Zero Carbon Britain 2030 is all about
dealing with the following main issues:-

• explanation of what is happening with peak oil and climate change

• strategy to limit world average temperature increase to 2%
• the numerous ways in which Britain and the world can reduce net carbon output
to zero
• move from fossil fuels to renewable and sustainable electricity generation
• no nuclear - high embedded carbon, high investment, long term waste and dangers
• sustainable generation with biggest emphasis on offshore wind
• solar, hydro and heat pumps
• pumped storage
• substantial job creation for both energy reduction and generation projects
• energy reduction - domestic, commercial and public
• retrofitting homes and other buildings
• new build methods
• transport - more public transport, walking and cycling and fewer private cars
• reduced aviation
• switch from oil based fuel to electric cars, buses and trains
• battery charging at off peak times eg overnight
• smart meters and smart appliances in every home and in much of manufacturing
• dramatic reduction in meat production
• alternative land use - less grazing, more food crops, more timber, some biomass
• carbon sequestration
• no animal feed imports
• less human food imports
• transforming economic structure from banking and retailing to one of carbon
efficiency
• capping and/or taxing of carbon (and methane) emissions
• feed-in tariffs
• different charging methods for electricity usage
