Winter Break Packet

1. The Magna Carta and the Declaration of the Rights of Man look similar, but are actually

very different. The Magna Carta was created to serve the interests of English Barons, and it came

to serve the whole country of England. Because of this, the Magna Carta does not mention the

natural liberties of man, rather it just protects them from the abuse of political power. Also, it is

different from the declaration as these are only specific laws. Therefore, there are only things

such as laws that will “protect” citizens from reimbursing Jews, as the people tried to

discriminate against the Jews or things they are require to let a widow do. Some things in the

article do not have anything to do with the rights of man. The Magna Carta states things that

enforce fairness (justice) rather than rights. The Declaration of the Rights of Man on the other

hand was made for the French Revolution. It took the ideals of the revolution and put them on

paper. It states the rights of man rather than law. The article declares the purpose of government

and law in addition to enforcing justice. The two articles have a difference in both purpose and

content.
