2. The first designs and data calculated for an OTEC system were
based on a land-based platform
3. However for the past years there have been a variety of
floating platform designs such as SPAR platforms, leg tension
platforms and ship shaped hulls.
4. Out of all the platforms stated the most common one used for
OTEC plants is the SPAR platform.
5. SPAR platform is a floating “rigid body with six degrees-of-
freedom, connected to the sea floor by multi-component
centenary mooring lines.
6. The design simplicity, the cost of constructing and maintaining
the platforms are some of the advantages for choosing this
platform
7. Nevertheless the main advantage is the stability ability against
the extreme conditions of the ocean waves.
