16.1 – Brief Review

-Acids
-Have a sour taste/ cause certain dyes to change color
-Word comes from Latin acidus
-Meaning sour/tart
-Bases
-Bitter taste
-Feel slippery (i.e. soap)
-Arrhenius definitions
-Acid—when dissolved in water, increases concentration of H + ions
-Base—when dissolved in water, increases concentration of OH - ions
-Definitions are limiting
-Restricts acids/bases to aqueous solutions

-Bronsted-Lowry defintions
-Acid-Base reactions involve the transfer of H + ions from one substance to
another

-H+ ion is a proton with no surrounding valence electrons
-Interacts strongly with the nonbonding electron pairs of water
molecules
-Forms hydronium ion – H3O+
