What is energy drink?
 Soft drinks specifically designed to provide
more energy than a typical drink. Energy
or ‘power’ drinks are beverages designed
and consumed for purposes other than for
improving athletic performance; for
instance, to reduce the depressant effects
of alcohol on the central nervous system
types
 Isotonic- Fluids, electrolytes and 6 to 8%
carbohydrate
 Hypotonic- Fluids, electrolytes and a low
level of carbohydrate
 Hypertonic (recovery drinks)- High level of
carbohydrate
Main Ingredients

 Carbohydrates  Ginseng
 Caffeine  Electrolytes
 Taurine  L –Carnitine
 Guarana  Sugar
 Vitamins B  Antioxidant
Which is most suitable?
 Isotonic - quickly replaces fluids lost by sweating and supplies a
boost of carbohydrate. This drink is the choice for most athletes -
middle and long distance running or team sports. Glucose is the
body's preferred source of energy therefore it may be appropriate to
consume Isotonic drinks where the carbohydrate source is glucose
in a concentration of 6% to 8% (Lucozade Sport)

 Hypotonic - quickly replaces fluids lost by sweating. Suitable for

athletes who need fluid without the boost of carbohydrate e.g.
jockeys and gymnasts.

 Hypertonic - used to supplement daily carbohydrate intake

normally after exercise to top up muscle glycogen stores. In ultra
distance events, high levels of energy are required and Hypertonic
drinks can be taken during exercise to meet the energy
requirements.
Journal support
 Initial result significantly greater men values in vo2max
for the PRX trial compared to the placebo trial.(Allyn
Byars et.al. Journal of the international society of Sport
Nutrition 2006)
 Energy drinks are meant to supply mental and physical
stimulation for the short time ( Health Hints, Texas
Cooperative Extension)

 Improve function of cortical regions responsible
for anticipation and preparation of movement.
 Enhancing endurance performance.
 Salt and carbohydrate in a sports drink act
synergistically to stimulate the up take of water.
 Speed full recovery to losses of post exercise
 Speeds glycogen restoration & muscle repair with
mixed carbohydrates & protein.
 Rehydrates with the electrolytes: sodium,
potassium & magnesium.
Side affects
 Caffeine add as diuretics & promotes
dehydration.
