1. A copper kettle contains water at 24 0 C. When the water is heated to its boiling point
the volume of the kettle expands by 1.2 x 10 – 5 m 3. Determine the volume of the kettle at
24 0 C.

2. A steel aircraft carrier is 370 meter long when moving through the icy water of North
Atlantic at the temperature of 2 0 C. By how much the carrier lengthen when it is
travelling the warm Mediterranean Sea at a temperature of 21 0 C.

3. A copper pot with a mass of 0.50 kg contains 0.170 kg 0f water at a temperature of

20 0 C. A 0.20 kg block of iron at 75 0 C is dropped into the pot. Find the final
temperature

4. An aluminum can with a mass of 0.5 kg contains a 0.34 kg of ethyl alcohol at a

temperature of 25 0 C. A 0.2 kg block of copper at 85 0 C is dropped into the can. Find
the final temperature. Specific heat ethyl alcohol = 0.58 kcal/kg 0 C aluminum = 0.22
kcal/kg 0 C copper = 0.093 kcal/kg 0 C .

5. A glass flask whose volume is exactly 1500 cubic centimeters at 0 degrees celcius is
completely filled with mercury at this temperature. When flask and memory are heated
10o degrees celcius, 20 cubic centimeters of mercury overflow. If the coefficient of
volume expansion of mercury is 18 x 10 – 5 / 0 C, compute the coefficient of volume
expansion of the glass.

6. How much heat is required to raise the temperature of 20 liters of ethyl alcohol from 28 0
C to 85 0 C

α of aluminum= 22.2 x10 -6 / 0 C

α of steel = 13 x10 -6 / 0 C
α of copper = 16.6 x10 -6 / 0 C
