Human Resource Management in Qur’an & Seerah
Syed Kazim
shaping the civilization of the world. Let it be in
the field of modern civilization, astronomy,
chemistry, medical science, social science, art, culture, etc.
The Qur'an not only talks about science, economics, social,
political, but it also talks about Human Resource
Management.
Human Resource Management (HRM) is the strategic
‘and coherent approach to the management of an
‘organization's most valued assets, which are the people.
Human Resource Management is an art of procuring,
developing and maintaining competent workforce to
achieve the goals in an effective and efficient manner.
Human Resource Management is a very vast field. It
comprises of various activities like human resource
planning, recruitment, Staffing, Performance Appraisal,
Training and Induction, Promotion and Transfers, HRD, Work.
Environment, compensation, employee & labour relations,
etc
The Qur’an in a verse talks about the two qualities
which should be taken into consideration while recruiting
a person. Allah (swt) tells in the Qur'an: One of the women
‘said, ‘O my father, hire him. Indeed, the best one you can hire
is the strong and the trustworthy’ (Al-Qasas, 28:26). This
verse Is extracted from the story of Prophet Musa (as) and
the father of the women is Shoaib (as). When Shoaib (as)
wanted to hire Musa (as), the two qualities which he looked
into was his strength (skill) and trustworthiness. If we do a
general analysis, we will realize that strength (skilled) and
trustworthiness are the only two qualities which should be
there in the employees for the company to work efficiently
and to be successful and prosper in the future.
Words like Human Resource and Recruitment are
relatively modern terms which were coined in 1960s but
we will be astonished to know that Qur’an has already
spoken about the recruitment and the qualities which
should be taken Into consideration while recruiting people.
‘The present recruitment system looks into various qualities
while recruiting a person, Integrity, Dedication,
Magnanimity, Humility, Openness, Creativity, Fairness,
Assertiveness, Sense of Humor, are some of them. But the
‘Qur'an has simplified and summarized it in just two words,
1420 years ago.
‘The Qur'an also teaches us about delegation and
‘accountability. We learn about delegation when Musa (as)
delegates his work to Harun (as) and we learn about
accountability when Musa (as) after coming back asks
[= has played a very important and critical role
Harun (a3) for what he did, By this we also learn that with
authority also comes responsibility and accountability
Leadership in HRis a very important aspect. A leader is
a person who influences a group of people towards the
achievement of a goal but an excellent leader is one who
creates leaders. Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) not only
influenced the people for the achievement of the goal but.
he also created great leaders who could carry on the work
after his departure. He was both a task oriented and
relationship oriented leader
He was a person who also all excellent in terms of
Human Resource Development. In the companionship of
Prophet Muhammed (pbuh), many people grew to great
heights from nothing. Bilal (ra) from a slave to chief
secretary, Zubair (ra) from a street fighter toa brave soldier,
‘Musab bin Umair (ra) from a soft spoken person to a chief
negotiator, Hamza (ra) from a hunter to a battalion
commander, Umar (ra) from just an angry man to a great
statesman and Ayesha (ra) from a house wife to a narrator,
medical practitioner, statistician etc.
‘One important aspect of HR is motivation and Prophet
‘Muhammed (pbuh) was a very good motivator. When in a
battle Prophet Muhammed (obuh) sees Zubair (ra) with a
turban He (pbuh) motivated Zubair (ra) by telling him,
“Zubair, today angels too have come on with red turbans to.
fight”. He (pbuh) motivated Ali (ra) by telling him, “I am
from Ali (as) and Ali (as) is from Me.” He (pbuh) motivated
‘Abu Bakar (ra) by saying “Had | made anyone a friend other
than Allah (swt), it would have been Abu Bakar (ra)”. He
(pbuh) also said about him in his last sermon, “No one has
been a better companion for me than Abu Bakar (ra)”. He
(pbuh) also used to assign the right person, the right job.
For example, He (pbuh) send Musab bin Umair to do Dawah
‘as he was very polite, He (pbuh) told Zaid ibn Thabit (ra) to
learn many languages fore.g, Hebrew which he did within a
fortnight. We have to utilize our HR skills and change people
iin a positive and constructive direction; a change to the
route which will lead to success in this world and in the
hereafter; a change that may lead to Peace and Salvation.
‘We can find the origin and base of all the knowledge which
is available in the world today, in Qur'an and the Sunnah.
{As Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an: Have you not considered
how Allah presents an example, 0 good word like a good
tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the
sky? It produces its fruit al the time, by permission ofits Lord,
And Allah presents examples for the people that perhaps
they will be reminded. (Qur’an 14:24-25)u
