Lehen Karlistaldia eta Britainia Handiko ilustratzaile
militarrak

Europak ibilbide luzea egin behar izan zuen sistema liberala ezartzeko, herrialde
bakoitzak bere erritmoa eta bilakaera eraman zuelarik. Espainian Lehen
Karlistaldia lehertu zenerako, aldaketaren aurreko erresistentzia ezaugarri izan
zuen absolutisten eta liberalen arteko gerra zibila, Britainia Handian gorpuztuta
zegoen sistema liberala, eta erabaki zuten Errege Itsas Armada eta soldadu
boluntarioak bidaltzea, Penintsulako iraultza liberalaren alde borroka zezaten.

Testuinguru horretan, britainiar militar batzuek beren lekukotza utzi ziguten

akuarelen eta litografien bidez, paisaiak eta eguneroko bizitzako gorabeherak
irudiztatu baitzituzten, gerrako bizipenez gain.

Erakusketa honetan zera aurkezten dugu: batetik, akuarelen koaderno bat, orain
arte argitaratu gabea; bestetik, Britainiako boluntario liberalen litografiekin
osatutako album batzuk; eta azkenik, lehen aldiz, Charles Henningsen boluntario

Richards eta Thomas HORNBROOK militar britainiarrak ziren eta Euskal

Herrian bizi izan zuten esperientzia irudikatu zuten irudien, akuarelen eta
estanpen bidez.

Richards, aita, Britainiar Itsas Armadako kapitaina zen eta Euskal Herrian
egin zuen egonaldian paisaien eta eguneroko bizitzaren irudiekin akuarelen
koaderno bat osatu zuen. Thomas, semea, Britainiar Legio Laguntzailekoa,
akuarelak pintatu zituen eta, bere lanekin, litografien bilduma bat argitaratu
zuen Londresen, izen honekin: Twelve Views in the Basque Provinces
illustrating several of the actions in wich the British Legion was engaged
with Carlist Troops.

Britainiarrak Karlistaldian

Britainiar armadak Kantauriko kostaldea kontrolatu zuen 1834ko urteaz geroztik,

karlistek ez zezaten armarik lehorreratu. Espainiako gobernu liberalak eta
Europako potentzia liberalek (Britainia Handia, Frantzia eta Portugal) sinatu
zuten Aliantza Laukoitza izeneko itunaren ondorioz hartu zuten parte gerran.
Izan ere, Zumalakarregiren arrakasta militarrek behartuta, gerran gehiago busti
zitezen eskatu zien Madrilek bere aliatuei, eta britainiarrek, eskaera horri
erantzunez, boluntarioen militar gorputza sortu zuten 1835eko ekainean, Legio
Laguntzailea izenekoa.

Lehen batailoia urte bereko uztailean iritsi zen Donostiara, eta abuztuaren
erdialderako 10.000 bat lagun zeuden jada Donostian.
Denen buru, George Lacy Evans izendatu zuten, eskarmentu handiko militarra.

Britainiarrek gerran esku hartu zutela eta, Don Karlosek Durangoko dekretua

Britainiar Legio Laguntzailea borrokan

Britainiar Legioko 10.000 lagunetatik laurden batek bizia galdu zuen gerra honetan.
Baina 2.500 hildako horietatik erdi bat ez zen hil gerrako borroken ondorioz,
gaixotasunek eraginda baizik.
Legioa Gasteizera eraman zuten 1835eko abenduan, eta negu oso gogorra egokitu
zitzaien hiri hartan. Hala, martxorako, 800 baino gehiago ziren hildakoak, gehienak
gaixotasunez. Testuinguru horretan, karlistentzat lan egiten zuen okin bat atxilotu eta
garroteko heriotza zigorrera kondenatu zuten, britainiarren ogia pozoitzeagatik.
Legioa Donostiara itzuli zen maiatzean eta, iritsi bezain laster, hiria setiatzen zuten
karlisten aurkako enfrentamendu batean parte hatu zuen. Egun gutxira, Pasaiako
portua konkistatu zuten.
1837ko martxoan, gerran izan zuten porrotik handiena jasan zuten, Oriamendin,
Infante Don Sebastianen eskutik. Alabaina, maiatzean, Errege Espedizioaz baliatuz,
Donostia eta Bidasoa arteko udalerriak konkistatu zituzten. Erresistentzia handiena
Irunen aurkitu zuten, baina azkenean konkistatu egin zuten eta, ondoren, arpilatu.
Britainiar Legiokoek bi urteko zerbitzu-aldia sinatu zuten eta gehienek, baita Lacy
Evans berak ere, gerra uztea erabaki zuten zerbitzu-aldia amaitzean, 1837ko
uztailean, gaizki hornituak izan zirelako beti eta oso berandu ordaintzen zitzaielako.
Hala ere, haietatik 1.700 lagunek geratzea erabaki zuten, O’Conell jeneralaren

Lord John Hay gotorlekua

Jaizkibel mendian eraiki zuten Britainiako Errege Itsas Armadaren zulatzaileek

1836ko udan, Pasaia lurreko erasoetatik babesteko. Lord John Hay komodoroaren
izena hartu zuen, - Britainiako Itsas Armadaren euskal kostaldeko arduraduna -, hark
agindu baitzuen eraikitzea.

Britainiako Itsas Armadako 160 lagun bizi izan ziren bertan. Bai Hornbrook aita-
semeek bai Wilkinson-ek gotorlekuaren irudiak egin zituzten.

"BRITAINIAR OFIZIALEN HILERRIA DONOSTIAKO GAZTELUAREN OINEAN.
Hiritik Donostiako Gaztelurantz igotzen ari garelarik, behin-behineko faro baten
aldamenetik igarotzean, eta malda bizian sigi-saga igotzen den bide batek inguratzen
duen harkaitz muino baten ertza supituki inguratzean, txunditu egingo gaitu bat-bateko
ikuspegiaren handitasun malkartsu eta basatiak. Harkaitz-puska erraldoi ugari daude
barreiatuta mendiaren magalean, landaretza trinko eta emankor batez inguraturik, eta
zeru-goietan, itsaslabar-mendi baten goieneko arrano kabi bat bailitzan, Donostiako
gotorlekua aurkeztuko zaigu, beldurgarri.
Naturaren dardarizo ikaragarri batek sortua dela dirudien paisaia zirraragarri horren
erdian, gaur egun lur sakratua den txoko txiki eta babestu batean, Gaztelua errotzen den
itsaslabar malkartsu eta esekiaren azpian hain justu, soropil-menditxo ugari ikusten dira,
Britainiar Legioko ofizial ausart askoren gorpuzkinen atseden-lekuak seinalatuz. Egurrezko
gurutze arrunt gutxi batzuk agertzen dira, erori zirenen inizialekin; (...).
Lehen planoan dagoen hilobi karratua, Ospitaleen Ikuskatzaile Orokorraren emazte
deitoratu Callender andrearen oroimenez altxa zuten. Berehala atzean dauden hilobietan
bi lehengusu ausart daude lur emanda, Tupper koronela eta Oliver De Lancey koronela”.
Henry WILKINSON

1924an, hilerria birgaitzea erabaki zuen Donostiako Udalak. Urte bereko irailaren 28an
inauguratu zuten, Maria Cristina eta Victoria Eugenia erreginak bertan zirela, Britainia
Handiko enbaxadorearekin eta agintari zibil eta militar ugarirekin batera.
Monumentuaren atarian hitz hauek zizelatu zituzten harrian, gaur egun ere irakur
daitezkeenak:
“A la memoria de los valientes soldados británicos que dieron la vida por la grandeza de
su país y por la independencia y la libertad de España (Beren herriaren handitasunaren
alde eta Espainiaren independentziaren eta askatasunaren alde beren bizia eman zuten
britainiar soldadu ausarten oroimenez)” eta “Inglaterra nos confía sus gloriosos restos.
Nuestra gratitud velará su eterno reposo (Ingalaterrak bere gorpuzki aintzatsuak utzi ditu
gure ardurapean. Gure esker ona izan bedi haien betiko atsedena)".

Henry WILKINSON

Henry Wilkinson-en biografiaren datu gutxi dauzkagu. Britainiar Legioko medikua zen
eta 5. erregimentuan sartu zen 1835eko urtean, zirujau bezala. Ondoren, Eskoziar
Granadarien erregimentura eraman zuten eta Britainiar Legio Laguntzaileko Estatu
Nagusira, berriz, 1837ko martxoan.
Bere egonaldian Sketches of Scenery in the Basque Provinces of Spain izeneko
obra idatzi zuen, Londresen argitaratua 1838an. Euskal lurraldetan izan zuen
esperientziaren narrazio interesgarri horretan udalerrien ikuspegiak eransten ditu, eta
baita ilustrazio musikalak ere, euskal doinuen eta soldadu espainolei entzundako
abestien partiturez osatuak.

Egile honi buruz ezer gutxi esan badezakegu, are eta gutxiago erakusketako beste
irudiak egin zituzten Charles Van Zeller maiorrari, Ramsay koronelari, Sydney
Crocker-i eta Bligh Barker-i buruz. Lehen Karlistaldian borroka egin zuten britainiar
militarrak zirela dakigu, ez gehiago.
