To know, learn,
understand about the
concept Conservation Of
Plants & Animals with
illustrated examples.
‘

‘f our earth is seen from space, Earth is a
small planet half hidden by the cloud
of its thin atmosphere. Less than a
third of the surface is dry land. Our
planet has a rich variety of life but it is
under threat because humans are using
up more and more of the Earthǯs
resources, making more waste and
causing more pollution.
Out we can also look after our planet, its
wildlife, environments, landscapes and
resources in all their variety.
Plants and animals are disappearing or
becoming endangered species at an
alarming rate. Every few years, the
‘nternational Conservation Union
updates a Red List of species that are in
danger of dying out.

Many animal species have either become
extinct or are on the verge extinction. This is
because of continuous and constant
exploitation by man. The ‘nternational
Union for Conservation of Nature and
Natural resources (‘UCN) have printed out
five main conservation categories of wild
animals and plants.
r
Reckless cutting of trees for unnecessary
reasons is referred to as deforestation.
Trees play a major role in developing
good habitats for human and wild life.
They regulate an areas precipitation to
a great level. Deforestation is having
threat against ecosystem and
weakening the relation between
human, nature and ecosystem.

ëreenhouse gases emission.
ë Change of climate all over the
globe.
ë Reduction of oxygen levels.
ë ‘ncrease in lobal warming
ë Reduction of rain water.
ë Scarcity of drinking water.
ë Deforestation results in soil erosion,
reduction of soil quality and flooding.
ë Lands capability to store water is
reducing.
ë Trees absorb groundwater and leave
the same into atmosphere during the
process of transplantation.
Ô

The main reason behind a
threat to the wildlife and the
ecosystem is the constantly
growing deforestation,
poaching and negligence
towards animals and nature.
r

All over the world, deserts are
spreading. Hot deserts and semi-
desert regions already occupy one-
fifth of the worldǯs land surface.
Some scientists believe that more
than 200 square kilometres of land
become desert each day.
The process by which fertile land
becomes desert is called
desertification. Desertification
threatens about one-third of the
worldǯs land surface and affects
the lives of about 850 million
people.

R
A species is considered extinct
when there is no reasonable
doubt that its last individual has
died, e.g., mountain quail, pink
headed duck, one horned rhino
and cheetah.
R

Species which are in danger of
extinction and whose survival is
unlikely if the causal factors
continue to operate. e.g., Orow
antlered deer, hispid hare, ‘ndian
rhinoceros, reat ‘ndian bustard,
musk deer, blue whale etc.
Π
Such a species contains sufficient
number of individuals in its
habitat but in the near future, may
became an endangered species if
unfavorable conditions persist.
e.g., crab eating macaque, golden
langur, chinkaro deer etc.

Species that are not presently
endangered or vulnerable but
are at risk e.g., ‘ndian egg
eating snake, ‘ndian pied
hornbill and golden cat fall in
this category.
‘

These are species about which
there is not enough
information.

Oiosphere Reserves:-
A biosphere reserve is a voluntary,
cooperative, conservation reserve
created to protect the biological
and cultural diversity of a region
while promoting sustainable
economic development.
National Parks:-
This comprises area which is
dedicated for conservation of the
environment, natural objects and
the wildlife therein. Forestry
operations are prohibited and it is
open to visitors who are not
allowed to disturb or harm the
protected plants or animals.
Sanctuaries:-
They are meant to protect and conserve
particular species of wildlife. They are
not bound by state legislation. Killing,
hunting or capturing of any animal
species is prohibited. Forestry and
other activities such as grazing of
domestic animals are permitted as long
as these activites do not adversely affect
the wild life.

Oird migration is the regular

seasonal journey undertaken
by many species of birds. Oird
movements include those
made in response to changes
in food availability, habitat or
weather.
 r
The ‘UCN (‘nternational Union for the
Conservation of Nature and Natural
Resources) maintains an international
list, published as the Red Data Book.
Red Data Oook species are classified
into different categories of perceived
risk. Each Red Data Oook usually deals
with a specific group of animals or
plants.

Paper recycling is the process of
recovering waste paper and
remaking it into new paper
products.Saving Paper is Saving
trees!! ‘t takes 17 full grown
trees to make one tonne of
paper.

Reforestation is the restocking of existing
forests and woodlands which have been
depleted.Reforestation can be used to
improve the quality of human life by
soaking up pollution and dust from the air,
rebuild natural habitats and ecosystems,
mitigate global warming since forests
facilitate biological processes of
atmospheric carbon dioxide, and harvest for
resources, particularly timber.
Ô

Thus, we conclude that the

process of Conserving Plants
and animals is useful to
retain our green wealth for
our future generations.
