BENEFITS OF UNIFORM LABELING
FLEXIBLE FOR THE CONTRACTOR
Meet TIA/EIA-606-A Labeling Standards

Provides Labor Savings - get off the job

faster - be more competitive and profitable.
Leaves an impression of quality workmanship

Saving labeling Records - Reduces potential

for error and eliminates the time to re-enter
information when changes and additions are
required.
FRIENDLY FOR THE USER

Increases the value of the telecommunications infrastructure investment - by

reducing the labor expense of administration ensuring effective service to their users.
Administrative support - making moves, adds, and changes simple in an ever-
changing work environment
Provides a uniform administration approach that is independent of applications
TIA/EIA-606-A STANDARDS
GENERAL
Specifies administration Classes – 4-Classes based on complexity of infrastructure
Uniform Approach – To support multi-product / multi-vendor cabling systems
regardless of application
Establishes Guidelines – Owners, end users, manufacturers, consultants, contractors,
network administrators, and designers.

CHANGES FROM PREVIOUS STANDARD

Classes of Administration – Defines the different needs for small, medium and large
cabling infrastructures.

Modular and Scalable – Allows for expansion to higher classes without requiring
changes to existing identifiers or labels.

Specifies common identifier formats – to facilitate the exchange of information

between design drawings, testers, administration software, and labeling tools. Identifiers
link the elements of the infrastructure with its record.
Specifies Labeling Formats
TIA/EIA-606-A STANDARDS

ELEMENTS OF AN ADMINISTRATION SYSTEM

Horizontal Links – Connecting hardware, Horizontal cable, Consolidation Point,
Workstation Outlet/Connector, MUTOA,
Backbone pathways and cabling,

Telecommunication Spaces – Entrance Facility (EF), Telecommunications room

(TR), Equipment Room (ER)

Firestopping & Grounding

TIA/EIA-606-A OBJECTIVE
Assign Identifiers to Infrastructure Components
Specify Information which make up the records for Each Identifier
Specify Relationships between records
Specifies reports for presenting information on groups of records
Specifies graphical and symbol requirements
TIA/EIA-606-A STANDARDS

COLOR CODING

Termination Fields – Color coding of termination fields simplifies MAC’s

Demarcation Point Cables to central office or service provider

Network Connection User side of central office cross connect
Common Equipment Connection to PBX, Mainframe, LAN
Key System Connections to Key telephone systems
1st Level Backbone Termination of Backbone cabling from MC to IC
2nd Level Backbone Termination of Backbone cabling from IC to HC
Campus Backbone Termination of Backbone cabling between buildings
Horizontal Termination of horizontal cabling in HC
Miscellaneous Alarms, Security, etc…
TIA/EIA-606-A STANDARDS

CLASSES OF ADMINISTRATION
4 Classes – accommodates the degrees of infrastructure size and complexity

Class 1 Class 2 Class 3 Class 4

Premise served Premise served 1 Administration of Administration
1 ER No TR’S or or more TS’s in a infrastructure of infrastructure
Backbone single building. with multiple with multiple
buildings at a sites or
single site. campuses

Specifications for each class – Requirements for Identifier, Records, and Labeling

Records - Administration System to provide a method to find the record associated with
specific identifiers
TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES

FORMATS OF ADMINISTRATION
Paper Based System – Ideal for smaller class 1 & 2 Installations.

General purpose spreadsheet software – Class 1, 2, & 3

Special purpose cable management software – Ideal for large Class 3 & 4

LABELING OF COMPONENTS
All labels must be mechanically printed – no hand written labels !

Each identifier must have a consistent format.

Labels should be resistant to environmental conditions at the point of use.

(Moisture, heat, ultraviolet light)
Label should have a life span equal to the labeled component
Use of Manufacturer specific labeling software or industry recognized hand held
printers improve legibility and provides a professional appearance.
TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES

Class 1 Identification Administration

Simple and easy – Single ER, No TR’s, no backbone cabling
Identify each horizontal link and TS
Required Identifiers - Formula is ( fs-annnn )
1. TS Identifier – Unique identifier in the format of fs
f = number identifying the floor of the building where the TS or ER is located
s= Letter identifying the location of the TS on the floor
2. Horizontal Link Identifier – Assigned to each horizontal link and to its elements
a = 1 or 2 letters identifying the horizontal cross connect with sequentially numbered
ports. I.e. Patch panels, 110 Cross Connect.
n = 2 to 4 numbers designating the port on the panel, or connecting block on 110.

Panels – Each Port on the panel and Panel ID.

Horizontal Cables – Each end of the horizontal cable should be labeled with the horizontal link
and TS. This label should be within 12” of termination to workstation connector.
At the work area – each individual outlet/connector should be labeled. This label can appear on
the connector, faceplate, MUTOA. Must tie connector to identifier.
