NEWS ARTICLE [30 MINUTES TO 40 MINUTES) ‘Adopted from New Straits Times Online Dated 2008/01/26 Kelantan folk seeking change By: Jennifer Gomez SERI KEMBANGAN: Barisan Nasional, through Umno, has been gaining support from the people of Kelantan, paving the way for a victory in the next election. Senior Kelantan Umno leader Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said: "Remember we (BN) received nothing in 1990, we were totally wiped out. And in 1999, we got one parliament seat and two state seats and in 2004, we managed nine parliamentary and 22 state seats. "So, the momentum has been building as a result of our service to the people,” he said afier witnessing the signing ceremony for research collaboration between Universiti Putra Malaysia and Padi Beras Nasional Bhd (Bernas) here yesterday. Mustapa, who is also Higher Education Minister, said that among the initiatives taken in Kelantan was the setting up of a RM200 million fund for poor students. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has visited Kelantan three times in two months to provide support to BN's attempt to wrest the state from Pas. However, Kelantan Pas leaders have shrugged off such efforts, claiming it would be an uphill task for BN. In its attempt to retain power, the Pas state government has been making many announcements lately, including the recent plans to build 2,000 affordable homes at a cost of RMIS million. State exco member Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said apartments would be built in Kota Baru, while other types of housing would be built in suitable areas.
