Welcome to Sukagawa, the airport city where both people and nature shine. Situated
approximately 200 kilometres north of Tokyo in Fukushima Prefecture, Sukagawa is a city
resplendent with natural beauty. Sukagawa has a rich history and culture which is reflected in its
many festivals and events. The most famous of which is the “Taimatsu Akashi Festival” – one of
the three largest fire festivals in Japan. The Sukagawa Peony Garden is another well known
attraction that is illustrative of the city’s natural beauty.
In March 1993, the Fukushima Airport was opened in the south east of Sukagawa. Whereupon
domestic flights to cities such as Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka and Okinawa began operating.
Furthermore, in June 1999, international flights to Shanghai and Seoul began operating – thus
enabling greater cultural and economic exchange.
In August 1993, Sukagawa became a sister city with Luoyang, China. The two cities are both
famed for the peony flower and have built a friendship of cultural exchange.
The people of Sukagawa City would like to extend a warm welcome to you and we look forward
to future interactions and cultural exchanges.

京から北へ約２００キロメートル、福島県のほぼ中央に位置し、街中が花と緑に囲まれた
風光明媚な都市で、世界一の須賀川牡丹園や、日本三大火祭りの一つに数えられているイ
ベント「松明あかし」など、優しい風土に抱かれ、歴史と伝統に培われた祭りや行事が沢
山あります。
西暦１９９３年３月には、須賀川市の東南部にある福島空港が開港。札幌、名古屋、大
阪、福岡、沖縄など、全国主要都市への定期便が就航しております。また、１９９６年６
月には、中国上海便と韓国ソウル便が就航し、文化、経済などの交流が促進されることが
期待されております。
また、１９９３年８月には、ボタンを架け橋に友好交流を深めてきた中国河南省洛陽市
と友好都市を締結し、文化や経済、技術などの交流を展開しているところです。

◆ 須賀川の四季
The Seasons of Sukagawa

● 桜まつり（４月中旬∼下旬）
The Cherry Blossom Festival(from the middle to the end of April)
Both sides of the Shakado River are lined with cherry blossom trees for a distance
of approximately 2 kilometers. At night the cherry blossoms are reflected beautifully on the surface
of river. This is one of the best scenes of Sukagawa.
釈迦堂川と須賀川（下の川）の両岸には、それぞれ２キロメートル、１キロメートルに
わたり桜並木が続いています。川面に美しい姿を映す夜桜は、須賀川の風物詩の一つです。

● すかがわ国際短編映画祭（５月中旬）
Sukagawa International Short Film Festival(mid-May)
This annual festival is held at the Sukagawa City Culture Centre for a period of 2 days in mid-May.
Every year twenty of the best short films are selected from around the world and are presented to
public.
“世界一小さな映画祭”として映画ファンにすっかり定着した「すかがわ国際短編映画祭」
は、毎年５月中旬の３日間にわたり須賀川市文化センターで開かれます。毎回、世界中か
ら選りすぐった話題の短編映画約３０本を上映しています。

● 須賀川の牡丹園（４月下旬∼６月末日）
Sukagawa Peony Garden(Botan-en Early to mid-May)
At the Sukagawa Botan-en there are 290 different varieties of the peony. These make up the total
7000 Plants in this 10 hectare garden. It is the largest peony garden in the world and was
nominated as a place of scenic beauty by the Ministry of Education in 1932.
 須賀川の牡丹園は、１０ヘクタールの園内に、２９０種、７，０００株の大輪の牡丹が
咲き競い、世界一の規模を誇っています。１９３２年に、文部省から名称に指定されてい
ます。

● きゅうり天王祭（７月１４日）
Cucumber and Heaven’s King Festival(Kyuri
Tennno-sai,July14th)
This festival has a unique custom where people offer two
cucumbers to God and take another to their own home. It
is believed that if the cucumber received at the festival is
eaten people will not become sick.
須賀川特産のきゅうりを神様に２本供え、お護符代
わりに別のきゅうり１本を持ち帰り、それを食べると、１年間病気にかからないといわれ
ている祭りです。

● 里守屋三匹獅子舞（７月最後の土・日曜日）
The Three Lion Dance (last Saturday and Sunday in July)
An invaluable cultural asset with a history of over 400 years, the Three Lion Dance, is a festival
aimed at achieving an abundant rice harvest and local security for the year. Both today and during
the festivals origins it has been characterised by brilliant dancing figures drifting through the
parade with elegance and simplicity.
約４００年の歴史をもつ無形文化財。その年の五穀豊穣と地域の安全を祈願する祭り。
げんざいもむかしのままのすがたでかれいにまいるおどるすがたは、そぼくななかにも重
厚な気品を漂わせます。

● 市民よさこい盆おどり大会（８月１５日）
The Bon Festival Dance(August 15th)
Many people take part in this dance wearing the traditional Japanese yukata. The festival is
livened up by people playing the drums and flutes
中央商店街に組まれたやぐらから勇壮な太鼓や笛の音が響きわ
たり、市民はもちろん、お盆で帰省中の人たちも、浴衣姿で参加
し、踊り流します。

● 釈迦堂川全国花火大会（８月お盆終了後の土曜日）
Shakado River National Fire Works Festival(the Saturday
following 0bon)
This is a large display of fireworks and every year more than two
hundred thousand people attend.
釈迦堂川の下流の中宿地区で催される須賀川の夏の風物詩
です。２尺玉をはじめ、音楽花火など、１万発もの花火が夜
空を彩る花火大会と灯籠流しが行われ、毎年３０万人を超す
人出でにぎわいます。

● 須賀川秋まつり（９月第２土曜日とその翌日）
Citizen Festival
The main Sukagawa shrine is jinsuikan shrine. For two days in
September each year the people from many local shrines come to the main
shrine and set out in festival mode.
須賀川の鎮守様である神炊館神社の礼大祭、各町内の御輿が勇壮
果敢に繰り出します。街中がまつり一色になります。

● 長沼まつり（９月第２土曜日）
Naganuma Festival (the second Saturday in September)
Magnificent bright paper lanterns are created all over Naganuma and are brought together for
this festival. The intensity and beauty of this spectacular festival are not to be missed.

各地区で作られたねぶた・ねぷたが集まってくる
様子は、壮観。紙と明かりの幻想。その美しさと強
さ、そしてたくましさが人の心を熱く燃やします。
● 円谷幸吉メモリアルマラソン大会（１０月第３日曜日）
Tsuburaya Memorial Marathon(held the day after the Taimatsu-akashi Fire Festival)
This marathon is held in memory of kokichi Tsuburaya’s award winning effort in the 1964 Tokyo
Olympic marathon where he received the bronze medal. The memorial marathon is designed so that
anyone can participate. There is a special section for parents and children and also a regular half
marathon that is officially recognized.
１９６４年の東京オリンピックマラソン競技で銅メダル
に輝いた円谷幸吉選手の偉業をたたえて開催されます。親
子の部から一般のハーフマラソンの部（公設コース）まで、
どなたでも参加できます。

● 松明あかし（１１月第２土曜日）
Taimatsu Akashi(The Torch Festival,2nd Saturday in November)
In the Middle Ages the Sukagawa Castle was burned by hostile troops. Taimatsu Akashi originates
from this and is regarded as one of the three largest fire festivals in Japan. During the day of the
festival large torches,samurai and princess parades are observed and at night large torches are set
alight as a reminder of the burning of the Sukagawa Castle.
中世時代の須賀川城落城にまつわる伝統行事で、日
本三大火祭りのひとつに数えられています。昼間には、
大松明や武者・姫行列が行われます。晩秋の夜空を赤々
と焦がすさまは、まさに一大戦国絵巻の再現です。

● 牡丹焚火（１１月第３土曜日）
Botan Takibi(Peony Bonfire,3rd Saturday in November)
Every year there is a peony tree bonfire. This is quite unusual as the fire has a purple tinge and
appears very mysterious. In 2001, it was selected as one of the “100 best scented sceneries” in japan
by the ministry of Environment.
須賀川牡丹園で、その年に天寿を全うした牡丹の木を
供養する雅やかな行事です。焚き火が始まると、あた
り一面に芳香を漂わせ、炎が次第に紫色に変わる様子
は神秘的です。２００１年に、環境省から「かおり風
景１００選」に選定されています。
●初寅大祭（旧正月初寅の日）
Hatsutora Taisai(New Year’s first Tiger Day, according to the old calendar)
This is a festival held for Bishamon-sonten at the Chousyouin temple. In
front of the temples gate there are many shops set up selling Daruma and
Masaru. This is a very poplar event.
長松院にまつられている招福除災・縁結びの神の毘沙門尊天の並び、
大勢の人出でにぎわいます。

● 翠ヶ丘公園
Midorigaoka Park
Located in close proximity to the city center, Midorigaoka park
maintains an area of approximately 30 hectares. There are
approximately 2000 Japanese red pine trees and 60 stones that
junior high school students have inscribed. The stones are
surrounded by flowers that are described in “Manyoshu” Japan’s
poems. A place visited by many tourists throughout the
seasons,Midorigaoka park was selected as one of the nations top 100 parks.
市の中心部に近接する総合公園（面積３０ヘクタール）として整備されています。園内
には、約１，８００本の赤松や、日本現存最古の歌集「万葉集」にうたわれた草花の歌碑
６０基が中学生の揮ごうにより設置され、四季を通じて観光客が訪れています。
１９８９年には、日本の都市公園百選に選ばれるなど、須賀川市を代表する公園です。

● 須賀川の牡丹園
This garden has a history of about 240 years. There are 7000 plants with over 290
different varieties of the peony, rose, iris and other beautiful flowers. There can be
viewed in this 10 hectare garden, the only peony garden designated as a national sight.
In front of the garden’s central gate stands a statue of Princess Botan which was built
as a symbol of the city’s friendship ties with Luoyang, China.
The best time for viewing the peony flower is from the beginning to the middle of May.
約２４０年（１７６６年∼）の歴史を誇り、約１０ヘクタールの園
内には、２９０種、７，０００株の牡丹をはじめ、バラ、シャクヤク、
花菖蒲などの美しい花が四季折々に咲き競います。全国の牡丹園の中
で唯一、国の名勝に指定されています。牡丹園正面入り口には、中国
洛陽市との友好の証として、同市の牡丹仙子像を模して、牡丹姫が建
立されています。牡丹の大輪が咲き誇る花の見頃は５月上・中旬です。
● ムシテックワールド（ふくしま森の科学体験センター）
Mushitech World(Science experience center in the heart of Fukushima forest)
The wonders of nature and science are here to be enjoyed by people of all
ages,(especially curious children asking “why?”) at Sukagawa’s Mushitech
world. Here you can explore the mysteries of nature, the world of insects
satisfying your curiosity of all things related to nature and science. You can
also experience our flight simulator.
Mushitech World was opened during “BEAUTIFUL FUKUSHIMA FUTURE
EXPO” on summer in 2001.
Its contribution to precision, excellence and discovery is something for us to be
proud of.
子どもたちの「なぜだろう」という知的好奇心を触発し、自然の不思議さ、科学の楽し
さを体験できる施設で、
「昆虫」をテーマとしています。飛行操縦の体験ができるフライト
シミュレーターの装置は、日本有数の精度と規模を誇り、子ども
から大人まで、楽しむことができます。
西暦２００１年の夏に開催された「うつくしま未来博」では、
パビリオン「なぜだろうのミュージアム」として利用されました。

● 須賀川テクニカルリサーチガーデン
Located conveniently close to both Fukushima airport and the national highway and surrounded by
the richness of nature, The Sukagawa Technical Research
Garden integrates high technology with our everyday lives
incorporating studies of work, lifestyle, leisure and
learning, in an attempt to create a strategically planned
city, which makes life easier. With an overall area 128
hectares of which 46 hectares was utilized during
“BEATIFUL FUKUSHIMA FUTURE EXPO 2001”.

福島空港などの高速交通体系の利便性と豊かな自然環境などの立地条件を生かし、先端
的試験研究施設や生産性の高い産業集積をはじめ、
「ふくしま森の科学体験センター」の学
習施設など、
「職」
「住」「遊」
「学」の各機能を一体的に備えた新しい環境と共生した複合
都市づくりを進めています。全体面積約１２８ヘクタールです。また、西暦２００１年に
同区域内の一部（約４６ヘクタール）を利用し、福島県博覧会「うつくしま未来博」が開
催されました。
● 福島空港
Fukushima Airport
In March, 1993, the Fukushima airport was opened with high expectations from the people of
Sukagawa and Fukushima for the begining of a new high speed traffic era in the region.
Now there are regular fights to Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka and Okinawa.
This airport has expectations of becoming a very important international airport in order to
alleviate the air traffic jams occurring in other metropolitan areas.

西暦１９９３年３月に、須賀川市民や福島県民の高速交
通時代への熱い期待を担って、開港しました。現在、国内
線では、札幌、名古屋、大阪、福岡、沖縄などの全国主要
都市、国際線では、中国上海、韓国ソウルと定期便で結ば
れています。

● 乙字ケ滝
Otsuji- ga-taki
This is the only waterfall in the Abukuma River which flows from the
Nasu heights. The name originates from the way in which the water
falls in the form of the Chinese character Otsu.
The width of the falls is 100 meters when the river is at its highest
point and it is a magnificent sight. The poet Basho Matsuo visited
here about 310 years sgo snd a monument with the haiku he wrote
here stands on the riverside.
那須高原に源を発する阿武隈川唯一の滝で、水が「乙」字の形をして流れ落ちています。
水嵩が増すと１００メートルもある滝幅いっぱいに落下する水しぶきが松の緑に映えて雄
大です。今から３１０年余り前、俳人松尾芭蕉が訪れました。その呼んだ句碑が河畔に建
っています。

● 松尾芭蕉と俳句
Matsuo-Basho Haiku Poetry
Haiku-A short poem containing 17 syllables on a space of three lines(5,7,5).
Haiku poetry has been popular in Sukagawa city from long ago.
Matsuo-Basho (a haiku poet) stayed in Sukagawa for eight days, on his (Oku no hosomichi) journey
during Edo period which he traveled by foot.
During his eight days in Sukagawa he met with the literary men of the city for a haiku exchange
event.
Also, haiku postboxes were established and placed throughout the city’s scenic and historic spots.
Poetry written by both visitors and locals is collected from these postboxes three times a year and
Sukagawa city holds an award ceremony for the best haiku poems.
５･７･５の全１７音で表現する短詩型文学である俳句は、昔から
須賀川でも盛んでした。江戸時代、俳聖松尾芭蕉は、
「おくの細道」
行脚で、須賀川に８日間滞在し、当地の文人たちと俳諧を催し交流
しました。また、市内名所旧跡などに、俳句ポストを設置していま
す。来訪者や市民に俳句を投函してもらい、年３回選句会を開いて
入選を選び、年間最優秀作品を市が表彰しています。

● 釈迦堂川ふれあいロード
The Shakado River “Fureai Road”
The scenic area alongside the Shakado River is approximately 2 kilometers long. It is a place for
relaxation and rest. There are various seasonal flowers that can be viewed here, over one hundred
thousand tulips in spring, salvias and marigolds in summer, cosmos in fall and the snow flower in
winter.
釈迦堂川河川敷の両岸約２キロメートルにわたって花
に彩られた市民いこいの広場です。春は桜とチューリッ
プ、夏から秋にかけては、サルビアやマリーゴールドな
ど咲き誇り、花とふれあう水辺の河川敷公園として市民
や来訪者から親しまれています。

● 博物館
History and Folk Museum
Built and opened in 1970, this museum displays 60,000 valuable historic and folk materials
including masterpieces from Denzen Aodo (a copper engraver born in Sukagawa).
博物館は、西暦１９７０年、県内の市町村に先駆けて建設、開館しました。６万点にも
ぼる貴重な考古・民俗資料をはじめ、本市出身の銅版画家である亜欧堂田善の作品や重要
文化財などが、多数収められています。
● 大桑原つつじ園
Ookannbara Azelea Garden
This garden is said to have originally been the private garden of Mr.Watanabe, a former governor of
the Ookannbara area. Since then,the number of azaleas has increased every year. Now, this garden
is about 2 hectares in area and in total approximately 10,000 red, white, and pink azaleas bloom in
the month of May.
今から約３００年前、大桑原の庄屋 渡辺家が自分の屋
敷に観賞用として植えたのが始まりとされています。以来、
年ごとに株を増やし、現在では、約１万株のつつじが約２
ヘクタールの庭園を埋め尽くし、５月には、紅、ピンク、
白など様々な花が一斉に咲き誇ります。

◆ 長沼地域案内
● 藤沼湖自然公園
Lake Fujinuma Nature Park
This park is rich and abundant in natural beauty and can be enjoyed by everyone throughout the
four seasons of the year. This park features hot springs and cottages which can be used as
accommodation facilities. The area also possesses numerous barbeque facilities and a golf course.
At this unique location, a whole view of the lake can be enjoyed by both young and old.
四季折々の季節が楽しめる自然豊かな公園として整備さ
れ、温泉やコテージ、オートキャンプ場などの宿泊施設を
はじめ、バーベキュー施設、パークゴルフ場も完備。パー
クゴルフ場は、藤沼湖を一望できる絶好のロケーションで、
子どもからお年寄りまで気軽に楽しめます。

● 馬尾の滝
Horsetail Waterfall
This waterfall is a branch of the Abukuma River and is set in a deep
ravine at the headwaters of Ebana River’s “Buddhist Temple of
wisdom”. Here a wonderful viewing area of the waterfall –
reminiscent of a horse’s tail – can be enjoyed. It is also in close vicinity
to four smaller waterfalls.
阿武隈川の支流、江花川の源流部｢勢至堂渓谷｣にある滝。白馬の尾がたれるような見事
な景観が楽しめます。付近には、このほか４つの滝が点在しています

● 大滝川公園
“Otakigawa” Park
This park is situated on the Ou Mountain Range’s hillside. It is a relaxing place and is best made
use of for its natural environment. Nostalgic boating, mountain climbing, hiking and “mallet” golf
can be enjoyed here.
奥羽山脈中腹につくられた憩いの場。懐かしい川遊び・
山遊びをはじめ、自然散策、マレットゴルフなどが楽しめ、
気軽に自然環境に親しむことができます。

● いわせ悠久の里
The Iwase “Yukyu no sato”
This facility includes a health counseling room, a guidance room and a light training room. There
are also heated swimming pools, and an indoor bath with an outdoor hot spring (rock bath, stone
bath and Japanese cypress bath). Health counseling, guidance and other medical examinations are
available here.
自然環境を生かした健康づくり、福祉ケア、市民コミュニケ
ーションのための総合複合施設。いわせグリーン球場や運動広
場、トレーニングセンターのほか、いわせ保健センターやいわ
せ老人福祉センターでは温泉を利用した健康づくりが進めら
れています。
