Biblical Ethics

Old Testament
Provides foundation through Law.
Introduces principles- mix of Transitory/Unchanging
Many are developed in New Testament.
Insists on the link between Righteousness + Ethical Conduct.

New Testament
Introduction of the Trinity (as opposed to Unitarian system)
Salvation provided by Christ.
Life based on Faith in God and communion with Saviour.
‘Love Relationship’ with the Lord.
Freedom from Sin enables true Relationship as meant originally with God.
Unbeliever has no Christ-Centredness.

Is Ethic of freedom- In God! Opposite to Legalism but through God’s word.

Love is heavily involved- Agape!!


Agape = selfless giving (ignoring own desires) in pursuit of correct action.
Agape is will of God shown through Jesus.

Holy Spirit is involved- brings regeneration and enables believer to live in


Victory over sin- doing what is right in God’s eyes.
Means of empowerment/ motivation of Good conduct- personal ‘helper/
guide’.
Enables believer to please God.

Is a future hope in Christianity- expectation of Christ’s return.


Behaviour is modified by this day of ‘accountability’.

Christian lives in hope. Conduct is motivated by relationship with God. Made


possible through sacrifice of Jesus and continued action with Holy Spirit.
