A Message from FBI Director Robert S.

Mueller, III

The arrest of 10 Russian spies living seemingly normal lives in our society. The
disruption of terrorist plots to bomb Times Square and other U.S. targets. The takedown
of 129 police officers and others in (do we know? – the D will likely not want to say
LIKELY – we should have the facts about our own cases) what is likely the largest
police corruption case in FBI history.

This past year, the FBI and its partners once again had our hands full dealing with a
range of national security and criminal threats. A snapshot of what we achieved
together is found in this latest edition of The FBI Story, a collection of news and feature
articles posted on the Bureau’s public website in 2010.

This book takes you inside some of the Bureau’s major investigations during the year—
a massive gang crackdown in upstate New York, nationwide mortgage fraud and
investment scam sweeps, a major bust of a global cyber ring that deployed a
sophisticated Trojan horse virus to steal millions of dollars, and a steady string of
takedowns of extremists bent on launching attacks on U.S. soil and overseas. It also
features two [deleted extended] series on how we are working with our law
enforcement partners to combat crime and corruption on the southwest border and
rigorously preparing our personnel for [deleted vital and often] dangerous
assignments in [deleted the war theaters of ] Iraq and Afghanistan. The book details
new ways we are using intelligence to track emerging and evolving security threats, our
ongoing efforts to catch dangerous fugitives, and the latest scams victimizing the
American people.

Our work to protect the nation [sted America] never stops, and it is clear throughout
these pages that our partnerships with law enforcement in the U.S. [sted America] and
around the globe—as well as the support and cooperation of concerned citizens—are
part and parcel of the work we do every day and [deleted absolutely] crucial to the
success of our mission.

On a personal note, my tenure as Director of the FBI ends in 2011, and I want to thank
you for your support during a time of tremendous [sted unrelenting] challenge and
change. It has indeed? Or truly? been an honor to serve. [deleted serve you, and I
wish you all the best in the future.]
