Fashion in the 1970s was quite varied, and it took some inspiration from lots of

different sources. In the early 1970s, hot pants became popular for women, and the
general style of “Hippy Chic” became more popular. The Hippy look first started in
the 1960s, but became so popular that it even spread to the 70s! A prominent style
of the Hippy look was very loose clothing, and flowing fabrics with floral patterns.
One of the most popular shoes in the 70s was the platform shoe. Although they
started with around 1/4 inch sole, they quickly rose to even 4 inches, which caused
many accidents just by walking in the street! By the mid-seventies, many people
were wearing 2 inches without thinking anything of it. One of the most popular
looks was the flared or bell bottom trousers. They began with flared, but soon
expanded to bell bottoms by mid-seventies. They slowly decreased though, and by
the end of the 70s, they were narrow again. One of the favourite colours of the 70s
was considered to be green; emerald, apple, and bottle. At the time, it became
possible to buy skirts or trousers that were matching, and had a coordinated colour
scheme. Knitwear was also very prominent in the 70s. Disco Fashion became very
popular, and began in the 1970s. It was memorable for its disco pants and sequined
tops. Punk styles also included safety pinks, piercings, Mohicans, and bovver boots.

Glam Rock was one of the first noticeable sounds in the 1970s, with the main
figureheads being Elton John and David Bowie. These were very welcome sounds
which offered light relief to the politics that were going on. Punk music originated
in the late 1970s, and the great British bands were The Sex Pistols and The Clash.
Although Punk is more known as being in the 1980s, it first originated in the
seventies. Disco was very popular, with the singer Donna Summers, and the famed
John Travolta and Saturday Night Fever. Hard Rock and Psychedelic Rock were
popular, with Jimi Hendrix (Who passed away in 1970) and AC/DC.

The 1970s was home to many strikes, of miners, postal workers, etc, which led to
the Winter of Discontent in 1979. During this, ITV went off air for five months and a
three day week was put in place to save on electricity during the miner’s strikes.
1977 was the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee with celebrations and parties in the
streets. In 1971, 91% had a television, and this was the time of colour television
too.

Funk was another popular genre in the 1970s. It

was mainly an African-American genre, which
mainly focussed on the rhythm. James Brown,
Stevie Wonder, and the Jackson 5 all came from
here. The Jackson 5 were one of the biggest
music groups of the 70s, and had lots of hits such
as “ABC” and “I Want You Back.” Elton John was
named as the Best Artist of the Decade for the
1970s in December 1979 by the American music
magazine Billboard Magazine. At the beginning
of 1970, the Beatles broke up, and Paul
McCartney formed a new bang called Wings.
ABBA also rose to fame after they won the
Eurovision Song Contest in 1974.
