Introduction
Every company in this world is striving for the business. They are searching for more and more
business for their product. Or we can say that they are searching for potential for their products.
In the Sify technologies, they have a product called Sify I way, which is an existing product. But
the company is striving for its potential in the south Delhi market. Though company wants to
expand their business in whole of Delhi but this expansion needs to be done in a phased manner.
For this purpose South Delhi is being taken as the first consideration. For this purpose the project
is being named as “Market Mapping potential for Sify I way.”

different locations which are meant to be remarkable ones for opening up of new Sify I ways.

Cyber cafe
An internet café or cybercafé is a place where one can use a computer with Internet access, most
for a fee, usually per hour or minute; sometimes one can have unmetered access with a pass for a
day or month, etc. It may serve as a regular café as well, with food and drinks being served.
History
The concept and name, Cybercafé, was invented at the beginning of 1994 by Ivan Pope.
Commissioned to develop an Internet event for an arts weekend at the Institute of Contemporary
Arts (ICA) in London. Pope wrote a proposal outlining the concept of a café with Internet access
from the tables. The event was run over the weekend of 12-13 March 1994 during the 'Towards
the Aesthetics of the Future' event.
In June 1994, The Binary Cafe, Canada's first Internet café, opened in Toronto, Ontario.
During the 5th International Symposium on Electronic Art, ISEA, in August 1994, an
establishment called CompuCafe was established in Helsinki, Finland, featuring both Internet
access and a robotic beer seller.
Inspired partly by the ICA event, a commercial establishment of this type, called Cyberia, [1]
opened on September 1, 1994 in London, England.
The first public, commercial American Internet cafe was conceived and opened by Jeff Anderson
in August 1994, at Infomart in Dallas, Texas and was called The High Tech Cafe.[1]
The next Internet café in the USA, called Internet Cafetm, was opened by Arthur Perley in early
1995 in the East Village neighborhood of New York City.
A variation of Internet café called PC bang (similar to LAN gaming center) became extremely
popular in South Korea when Star Craft came out in 1997. Although computer and broadband
penetration per capita were very high, young people went to PC bangs to play multiplayer game
Internet cafés are located world-wide, and many people use them when traveling to access
webmail and instant messaging services to keep in touch with family and friends. Apart from
travelers, in many developing countries Internet cafés are the primary form of Internet access for
citizens as a shared-access model is more affordable than personal ownership of equipment. A
variation on the Internet café business model is the LAN gaming center, used for multiplayer
gaming. These cafés have several computer stations connected to a LAN. The connected
computers are custom-assembled for game play, supporting popular multiplayer games. This is
reducing the need for video arcades and arcade games, many of which are being closed down or
merged into Internet cafés. The use of Internet cafés for multiplayer gaming is particularly
popular in certain areas of Asia like China, Taiwan, South Korea and The Philippines.
There is also Internet kiosks, Internet access points in public places like public libraries, airport
halls, sometimes just for brief use while standing. Many hotels, resorts, and cruise ships offer
Internet access for the convenience of their guests; this can take various forms, such as in-room
wireless access, or a web browser that uses the in-room television set for its display (usually in
this case the hotel provides a wireless keyboard on the assumption that the guest will use it from
the bed), or computer(s) that guests can use, either in the lobby or in a business center. As with
telephone service, in the US most mid-price hotels offer Internet access from a computer in the
lobby to registered guests without charging an additional fee, while fancier hotels are more likely
to charge for the use of a computer in their "business center."
For those traveling by road in North America, many truck stops have Internet kiosks, for which a
typical charge is around 20 cents per minute. [1]
Internet cafés come in a wide range of styles, reflecting their location, main clientele, and
sometimes, the social agenda of the proprietors. In the early days they were important in
projecting the image of the Internet as a ‘cool’ phenomenon.
As internet access is in increasing demand, many pubs, bars and cafes have terminals, so the
distinction between the Internet cafe and normal café is eroded. In some, particularly European
countries, the number of pure Internet cafés is decreasing since more and more normal cafés offer
the same services. However, there are European countries where the total number of publicly
accessible terminals is also decreasing. An example of such a country is Germany. The cause of
this development is a combination of complicated regulation, relatively high internet penetration
rates, the widespread use of notebooks and PDAs and the relatively high number of WLAN
hotspots. Many pubs, bars and cafés in Germany offer WLAN, but no terminals since the Internet
café regulations do not apply if no terminal is offered. Additionally, the use of Internet cafés for
multiplayer gaming is very difficult in Germany since the Internet cafe regulations and a second
type of regulations which was originally established for video arcade centers applies to this kind
of Internet cafes. It is, for example, forbidden for people under the age of 18 to enter such an
Internet café, although particularly people under 18 are an important group of customers for this
type of Internet café.
While most Internet cafés are private businesses many have been set up to Help Bridge the
'digital divide', providing computer access and training to those without home access. For
example, the UK government has supported the setting up of 6000 tele-centres.
Internet:
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that interchange data by
packet switching using the standardized Internet Protocol (IP) Suite. It is a "network of
networks" that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government
networks of local to global scope that are linked by copper wires, fiber-optic cables, wireless
connections, and other technologies.
The Internet carries various information resources and services, such as electronic mail, online
chat, file transfer and file sharing, online gaming, and the inter-linked hypertext documents and
other resources of the World Wide Web.
The terms "Internet" and "World Wide Web" are often used in every-day speech without much
distinction. However, the Internet and the World Wide Web are not one and the same. The
Internet is the global data communications backbone, i.e., the hardware and software
infrastructure, that provides connectivity between resources or services and the users of such
facilities. In contrast, the Web is one of the services communicated via the Internet. It is a
collection of interconnected documents and other resources, linked by symbolic hyperlinks and
URLs.

Research Methodology:
To decide upon the number of I ways to be opened in a particular area is primarily decided on the
basis of the no of existing cyber cafe in that area. And this number is also dependent upon the
revenue being generated by those cyber café. To get this data a questionnaire was being designed.
This questionnaire was being taken to each cyber café in south Delhi. For this matter south was
being divided into zones and sub zones, which is as follows.

In all these subzones an administered questionnaire was passes through and information was to
be collected. This questionnaire has 3 sections:
1. In this section the contact information about the cyber café was being collected. In this
the information collected are:
• The name of the owner
• The address of the cyber café
• Contact number of the cyber café
2. The second section attempts to collect the information about the technical details about
the cyber café. This includes the information such as:
• No of computer in the café
• Configuration of the computers
• Internet connection that the café owner was using:
• Type of connection that the owner was using
• Rate that the owner was charging from customers
• Average daily revenue that the cyber café owner was earning
• The information about other facility such as scanner, webcam, printer (color and
black & white), cold drinks and tea wending machines
3. The third section attempts to collect information on the location, ambience, of the cyber
café. It also collects information about the marketing promotion being undertaken by the
cyber café. In this section information about the experience of the cyber café owner is
being collected.
And above all the above investment depends upon some factors such as:
Converting (from an existing cyber café)
The primary additional investment required would be in terms of the web stations and doing up
the interiors to match standards (and up gradation of PC's, A/C if required)
Co-Locating (within an existing retail/ public center)
Under normal circumstances, additional investment in interiors might not be required if the
current location is good.
Creating (a new I way)
Since this would be a fresh start up venture all the investments in creating the infrastructure is
required.

as sales, location, occupancy, operating costs and the ability of the franchisee to manage
and control the business.
Also an application for the Sify I way could be made through online.
For analysis purpose Sify has own set of rules regarding opening up of I way in a particular
subzones. They prefer to open an I way in a location where average daily revenue is more than
1000. If per day revenue of a particular area is found to be more than 1000 than that area is being
taken into consideration. After that other factors are being taken into account such as location of
that area, type of locality in that area, type of community residing in that area and certain other
factors.
For the analysis purpose we have processed the data individually on the sub zone basis. And after
that we decide upon the no of I ways to be opened in that area.
For the analysis purpose each subzone was individually analyzed and on that basis of that
conclusion is being drawn. While drawing conclusion, other factors we mentioned earlier are
being taken care. There is a great importance of these factors as there are certain areas where we
have revenue near about 21000 per day. But due to the locality we cannot afford to open 21 I
ways in that area

Malviya Nagar has two major commercial shopping areas and markets and a specialty hospital.
There are several neighborhood parks that are popular jogging and running areas. Malviya Nagar
has two markets, The Corner Market and The Main Market (closed on Tuesdays). These markets
cover the day to day and even some extravagant needs of the local residents. The Main Market
has several stores, including those selling vegetables, fruits, clothes, appliances etc. Malviya

This sub zone is very close to Malviya nagar corner market. It has mostly small streets with small
shops. A very small market was present along the main road. Mostly market consisted of car

It is a highly densely populated area. There are 6 existing cyber café and cyber owners were
interested in converting to an organized cyber café. In this subzone there is a huge potential for
the cyber café as in this area we have JNU near to it and in this small DDA market complex only
we have near about walk inn’s more than 5000. Out of 5000 more than belong to student
community who come for report binding or work related to thesis etc. so we can proposed 2 I
way in that area. And also a revision of this area should be done after 6 months if we could find
any more potential

There were lots of cyber café and no and only one I-way is there. There is a potential for I-way in

• Sify should contact the government officials and try to open Sify I-Ways at the public
places like Railway Stations, Airports, Metro Stations, and Bus Stands. Here exist a very
good potential for new Sify I-Ways.
• Sify should collaborate with various high school and colleges to open Sify I-Ways at
campuses as student community can be greatly benefited.
• Sify should advertise more like more displays and it must make aware that what are the
benefits customers can get when they come to a Sify I-Way rather than a local cyber café.
• Currently Sify is using a flat rate for all its Sify I-Ways. This model needs to be
reconsidered. Our recommendation is that Sify should charge depending on the area the I-
Way is operating. If it’s a student majority area and the local cyber café is offering lower
rates then it’s very difficult for the Sify to generate revenue. So they must charge
depending on the area they are operating.
• Sify should introduce some promotion schemes. Like for first time SIfy I-Way users there
can be a scheme so that people get to start using I-Ways. Also on a continuous basis for
regular customers also some schemes should be launched so that they continuously use I-
Ways
