E&M Final

Part b.
Autumn Term
2010

I have written an exam for one hour. You may take 2.5 hours to complete
the exam. Show all your work. Draw a box around your final result. It goes
without saying that you should not use any calculators, books, etc.

Please turn this exam into my mailbox in the Chemistry/Physics Department

Office. Do not turn the exam in at my office door. The exam will be due at
3pm on Tuesday.

Question 5: Write down Maxwell’s Equations in their full form. What name
is associated with each equation? What does each law say. This is for 25
points of credit. I want to know qualitatively what each law says, what it
implies, and why is it important? Now assume that there exists magnetic
monopoles (that is isolated particles of have North and South as a direction).
How would your Maxwell Equations change? Currently physicists all over
the world are searching for magnetic monopoles. Magnetic monopoles have
a special place in my heart.

Question 6: Find I1 , I2 , I3 and the potential difference from point b to point
e in the figure below.

Question 7: Positive charge has been distributed uniformly over the entire
XY plane. The charge per unit are is given by surface charge density σ. Find
the electric field at some point P on the Z axis.

4
Question 8: A current carrying wire in the form of a semi-circle lies in a
plane at right angles to the direction of the magnetic induction field. Show
that the force on the wire is the same as that experienced by a straight wire
along the diameter between the end of the semi-circle.
