Introduction
•In July 2010
•Cabinet selected a new Symbol for the Indian
Rupee which looks like as the snapshot shown
below.
Basic aim of the new symbol
•Economy exerts more influence in the global
space

•Unique sign will also help isolate the currency

•Provide the Indian rupee international


recognition
•Rs’ which is used by neighbouring Pakistan,
Nepal and Sri Lanka.
Selection of Rupee Symbol
•On March 5, 2009
•During the Union Budget 2010 , FMA
•Symbol would reflect and capture the Indian
ethos and culture.
•Five symbols had been short listed

. •Cheque of Rs2.5 lakh.

Benefits of the new Rupee Symbol
•The symbol will also set India apart from other
countries
•The account convertibility and trade will be easier
•More capital is expected to flow into the Indian market
•A fixed exchange rate and independent monetary
policy- will be easier to be tackled.
•Good impact on growth, price stability and
financial stability of the Indian economy . 
•There are positive signals of better results in
eradication of illiteracy and poverty.

•Fifth currency, the others being the US dollar,


British pound-sterling, Japanese yen and Euro.
