Guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Niels Henning Oersted-Pedersen both play well on
these live performances, but the reason to acquire this set is for the remarkabl
e Oscar Peterson. The pianist brilliantly investigates several jazz styles on "B
lues Etude" (including stride and boogie-woogie), plays exciting versions of his
"Chicago Blues" and "Easy Listening Blues," tears into "Secret Love," and shows
honest emotion on "Come Sunday." Peterson really flourished during his years wi
th Norman Granz's Pablo label, and this was one of his finest recordings of the
period. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG
"Recorded live in Chicago, Illinois in 1973, the trio consisting of guitarist Jo
e Pass, bassist Niels Pedersen, and the incredible pianist Oscar Peterson bring
together a number of jazz styles and sensibilities on The Trio. Moving from boog
ie-woogie to stride, and into honest emotion and rip-roaring energy, this album
takes its listeners across the musical map and never lets them down. A veritable
landscape of jazz styles, it s an example of the fine work that Oscar Peterson di
d in his recordings for Norman Granz s Pablo label, and is one of the definitive j
azz recordings from the Canadian master of ebony and ivory."
