Introduce me

What do you know about Japan?


Introduce haiku – shortest formal form of poetry in the world
1st line – 5 syllables
2nd line – 7 syllables
3rd line – 5 syllables

Check knowledge of syllables.

Read /present a couple of haikus to the class – ask someone to come up and mark each
syllable with a diagonal line. Count syllables for each line.

Choose a topic – eg Spring – shared writing, generate words to describe spring.


1 pair write nouns, 1 pair write adjectives, 1 pair write verbs. Check understanding of
these parts of speech
Give 5 mins.
Write ideas on flipchart/board.

Now pin up each chart on the wall, and model selecting words from each to create a
haiku.

Children choose words of their own to create a Spring haiku.

Read out poems at the end.
