Derek Stoeckmann Black Hawk

Down

1)
The U.S. military made many mistakes in Somalia resulting in the
death of 18 soldiers. These mistakes include not properly
equipping the soldiers, they requested AC130’s and tanks.
Instead they were given black hawk choppers and humvee’s.
They also didn’t go in with enough troops to fight the militia.
They underestimated the Somalia’s weaponry. These mistakes
resulted in the death of the American soldiers.
2)
There are many difficulties associated with urban warfare. These
include; many shooting angles, how it is hard to transport
supplies, usually one side is unaware of the terrain, and innocent
civilians in the middle of combat.
3)
We learn from Somalia that urban warfare is difficult, and dealing
with innocent civilians in the way of gunfire. We also learned
about going into battle better equipped for any situation which
we now apply in Iraq and Afghanistan.

4) The events in Somalia kind of gave us an incentive to not

intervene in affairs in Africa. We looked at Africa as a constant
source of chaos and feel there is little to no economic interests
there.
