(Model.) A. M. PRIEND. MANUAL MOTOR. No, 364,406. Patented June 7, 1887. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. ADAM M. FRIEND, OF RAWLINS, WYOMING TERRITORY. MANUAL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Apnlication Gol May 11,1686. To all whom it may concern: Bo it known that I, ADAM M. Frrenp, of Rawlins, in the comity of Carbon, Wyoming ‘Territory, have invented a newand usofal La provement in Mannal Motors, of which the fol lowing is a specification. ‘The invention is a combined hand and foot power motor, for nse for driving printing presses or other light stationary machinery; also for propelling vehicles of various kinds. Ib is so constructed that both the weight and strength of the operator may be applied and utilized for propulsive effect. ‘The invention is fully deseribed hereinafter, and the featnres of patentable novelty ind? ated in the elaim: Tn thedrawings, Figure1 isa side view with one of the sides of the frame detached. Fig. 2 is a plan view, the levers being, however, | not in exactly the same position as in Fig, 1. | Fig, 3 is a detail view showing an alternative position of one of the hand: Jevers and its | pavl, Tn the frame F are journaled three horizon- al shafts, Nos. 1 2.3, No. 1 is the driving. | shaft; No.3, the shaft from which power is taken off, and No. 2 is the intermediate or power-transmitiing shaft. On the shaft 1 is fixed a driving-gear, G, which meshes with a pinion, P, on shaft 2, anda gear, G, on the lat ter in furn meshes with a pinfon, P*, on si 3, Tn this arrangement of shafts and gears there is of course no novel feature. The operator of this motor bestrides seat S, so thathis feebrestonand work the two treadle- levers ‘I, while he grasps the two hand-levers H. These two sets of levers are journaled loosely on shaft-1, there being one freadle-le ver aud one hand lever on cach side of the Ariving-gear G. Tn theforks of the levers is cog-whieel or ratchet, TR, which is fixed on shaft 1,” Bach hand-lever H has a pawl, p, that is pivoted inits fork, the latter being of sufficient Jength, relatively, to allow said pawl toswin through it,so that the lever may be worked either way to rotate the gear G in either d rection. ‘The alternative position of the pawl isshown in Fig.8, The free or working end of the pawl p is made flat, so that right-anga: go lar shoulders are provided to engnge the teeth | { 10 30. 35 40 MOTOR. Patent No, 364,406, dated June 7, 1867. Sevat No. 50,884, Aodsl of wheel R. ‘The treadtedevers TT also have pawls p* pivoted in their forks, and adapted folikewise engage the toothed wheels R. Foot- levers f are pivoted in the outer endsof treadle evers’T, and the part-of them that projects above the pivot serves as a foot block or rest, and the longer arm below acts on the pawl p* to raise it into engagement with the wheel 2, ‘Tosnpport each treadle T in position to be conveniently reached by the fect of the oper ator, also to raise it after each depression, T employ a spiral spring, s, which is pendent from a rocker, 7, pivoted ‘on seat 8, Obvi- onsly, when no pressure is applied to foot vers f, the pawls p* will hang down ont of ae: tion, and the hand-levers If may be used alone to operate the motor; or one treadle'T may be used alone, or one hand-lever and treadle may he used together, or both treadles and both hand levers, as preferred or required, ‘Thus 7 the operator may apply little force, ov as much as he f& eapable of, nécording to’ conditions. It will be noted that when he pulls on ahand- lever, H, he will naturally press dowaward with his foot on a treadle-iever, thusapplying force with both, and to a greater degree than would be otherwise possible. Tn brief, both the weight and strength of the operator are utilized in direct application of foree to the 38 60. 65 75 , 8 hefore: intimated, the paws of hand-le. vers H may be swung over the shaft Land the lovers worked from a seat (not shown) placed onthatside. Other treadles may be also pro: vided on the side opposite that where the seat is shown located, What I claim is— 1. In a mechanical motor, the combination of a freely-vibrating hand-lever and a treadie having pawls, as shown, with a toothed wheel, anda rotatable shaft on which the toothed ‘whee! is fixed and from whieh shaft power is transmitted, as set forth. 2, Ina mechanical motor, the combination, with a driving-shatt, 1, having toothed wheels 95 R fixed thereon, of the hantlevers Hand treadle levers T, having pawis adapted to en. gage said wheels, and-means for supporting said treadle-levers, asshown and described. 3. The combination, with the driving-shatt 9° 2 364,406 1, having toothed wheels R fixed thereon, of lever, f, pivoted thereto, the latter heing ar hand-levers H, which arehung loosely onsaid | range’ as specified, whereby it is adapted to shaft and constructed with forks embracing | raise the paw! into engagement with said wheel said wheels, and the pawls which are pivoted | when pressure is applied to the foot-Jever, as Snsnid forks and mado of thoTength specified | shown and described, whereby the levers areadapted to be reversed Pate for the purpose of working the motor in the CNA Ss reverse direction, as set forth. : 4. The combination, withashattand toothed ‘eED B. Port to wheel, of the treadle-Jever'T, a pawl and foot Dawrer 0.
