National Consumer Protection Week March 6 – 12, 2011

‘Your Information Destination’
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are
joining forces this year to inform the public on how to arm themselves with information for
National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW). NCPW will take place this year from March 6
through March 12, 2011.
This year’s NCPW theme, Your Information Destination, is intended to highlight consumer
education resources available through various distribution channels. The U.S. Postal Service
and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service are committed to helping consumers of all ages learn
how they can protect their private information and steer clear of frauds and scams.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, only about 2 percent of all identity crimes involve
the U.S. Mail. Still both the Postal Inspection Service and the Postal Service are committed to
providing consumers the information and tools they need to guard against losing their hard
earned money to fraud and to recognize the warning signs that they are about to become the
next victim.
Some of the warning signs that should raise a red flag are:

 If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t

 Schemes that pressure you to act the “right away”
 If it “guarantees” success
 Requires an upfront investment – even for a “free prize”
 If something just doesn’t feel right – trust your gut.

The Postal Inspection Service has launched a Website called deliveringtrust.com. On the
Website consumers will find many fraud facts and helpful hints that will help protect them
including:

 Your bank will never e-mail or call you for your account number.
 Don’t wire money to people you don’t know.
 Be cautious of work-at-home job offers.
 There are no legitimate jobs that involve reshipping items or financial instruments from
your home.
 Foreign lotteries are illegal in the U.S. You can’t win no matter what they say.

nation, 150 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars. With 36,000 retail
locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government, the Postal Service relies on the sale of postage,
products and services to pay for operating expenses. Named the Most Trusted Government Agency five consecutive years and
the sixth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $68
billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail. If it were a private sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 28th in the
