Introduction to bar charts

Length: 150 words. Less than 136 words will lose you marks
Time: 30 minutes

There are 4 types of graphs you will learn to write about:

• Bar charts
• Line graphs
• Pie charts
• Tables
Up to the first progress test we will be looking at bar charts, pie charts, and
tables.
Bar charts

Bar charts show a comparison of 2 or more items. Study the chart carefully and
make sure you understand it before you start writing.
Write 3 paragraphs:

Paragraph 1
This tells the reader what sort of graph it is and what is the subject or topic. This
information can be found in the task question and the chart itself. Do not use the
same wording as this will lose you marks.

Paragraph 2
This contains information from the graph. You must not give your opinion about
any information from the graph. Identify the important facts.

Paragraph 3
The final paragraph gives an overall picture. You must give an overall picture to
get a good mark.
