In the mobile industry, apple and androids are the top smart phones with windows mobile continuing to
fall farther behind. The problem facing Microsoft is how you successfully make a name for yourself in a
phone industry which is nearly saturated?

Slide 3: needs to innovate

One of Microsoft biggest problems is that it needs innovate. A lot phones under windows mobile have
slow processors and don’t beat the capabilities of their competitors.

Slide 6: Put competitive advantages to good use but also adapt with online app store

We believe that Microsoft can solve this problem by differentiating itself from its competitors by
incorporating some of its competitive advantages into a mobile phone and also work on Microsoft's
branding in the phone industry.

Business Week Microsoft's (MSFT) grasp on the market for mobile-phone operating systems has been
slipping because it hasn't kept pace with the rate of developments in the smartphone market

Slide 9: Microsoft needs a new target market for windows mobile

ZDNet Traditionally, Microsoft aimed Windows Mobile at corporations that wanted Windows as a
standard across PCs and handhelds. But many companies no longer have those policies. Workers are
now using the same smart phones for office and personal tasks — and they're not choosing
Windows.Microsoft needs to work toward making it smart phones consumer friendly. Smart phone
users have leaned toward consumer friendly applications.

Slide 10: Windows Mobile Causing HTC to Drop In Sales. Windows popularity is dying

Business week: HTC is the number one producer of windows phone. However windows mobiles
popularity is dying. Consumers notice that most of windows operated phones are much chunkier than
apple and androids. Also the OS Windows Mobile 6.5 has had a lot of criticisms. Because of that HTC is
still continuing to put out windows phones, however they are putting out less and more so focusing on
androids.

Proquest: Microsoft Kin was a smart phone that debuted in April of 2010 and began sales in May which
were targeted towards the younger market – their main function was to be used for social networking.
However, due to the high service provider costs and the lack of practical smart phone capabilities these
phones were largely unsuccessful. Microsoft pulled Kin from the market on July 1 of 2010

At the end of April, 14% of U.S. smart phones were running Windows Mobile. In july the amount
dropped to 11.8%.

The Microsoft Blog in Seattle reported 6 days ago that Microsoft lost another 2.2 percent of the U.S.
mobile operating system market as Google's share shot up 5 points.

Slide 15:

So the next big phone Microsoft is putting out is Window Phone 7. So Microsoft future in the smart
phone industry is counting on this phone. With Androids being a sure bet, anymore slip ups with
Windows Mobile, will cause these future implications to become reality.
