1. Find the rate of change of the area of a square with respect to its side x when x=6.

Solution:

A=x^2

dA/dx = 2x

dA/dx =2(6) = 12

45. A spherical snowball is melting in such a way that its surface area decreases at the rate of

1in^2/min. How fast is its radius shrinking when its is 3 inch?

A = 4 x pi x r^2

dA/dt = 4 x pi x d(r^2)/dt

dA/dt = 4 x pi x 2r x dr/dt

1 = 8 x pi x r x dr / dt

dr/dt = 1 / (8 x pi x r)
dr / dt = 1/(8 x pi x 3) = 1/(24 x pi)

30. the height after t seconds of travel of a projectile thrown upward from the top of a 96-ft

building is h(t)=80t-16t^2+96ft. What is the maximum height reached by the projectile's initial

velocity.

Solution:

h=80t-16t^2+96

dh/dt = 80 - 32t = 0 (maxima)

t = 80/32 = 2.5

h=80(2.5)-16(2.5^2)+96 = 200 - 100 + 96 = 196

32. A rod of length 5ft has linear density proportional to the cube of the distance from one

end. If the total mass of the rod iss 500 slugs, compute the density of the rod at its midpoint.

SOLUTION:

linear density = kX^3 where X is the distance from one end and k is the constant of

proportionality.

mass = k(X^4)/4 - obtained by integration.

total mass = k(5^4)/4 = 500 slugs

k = 500*4/625 = 3.2

linear density @ midpoint = 3.2 * (2.5^3) = 50 slugs/ft.
