Monetary policy in simple prose
By Anil Sasi
The RBI can learn a lesson or two from its Swedish counterpart, which has
bagged an award for lucid, accessible communication.
Sweden's central bank, the Sveriges Riksbank, in a series of path-breaking steps towards opening up its
communication lines, recently announced plans to have its own You Tube channel. Broadcasts have
been made available for viewing on the Riksbank's YouTube channel since July 8. Sweden's central bank
has been on the forefront of simplifying communication by using plain and simple language to explain its
decisions. Providing language coaching and organizing seminars on plain language, have made Swedish
central bank apart. Trying to de-jargonize communications at large to make it as inclusive as possible to
enable scrutiny and evaluation. By the target groups like households, the media and its own employees,
along with members of the Riksdag, government agencies, companies and banks. A great step in
breaking the ice with the general population.
