Psychology is the science of mind and behavior, while psychiatry is the


medical specialty devoted to the study and treatment of mental disorders²which
include various affective, behavioural, cognitive and perceptual disorders.The
word ³psychology´ literary means ³study of the soul´, while the word
³psychiatry´ means ³medical treatment of the mind´.
The history of the psychology and psychiatry can be traced back to time to
the ancient civilizations from Greece to islamic world.Many cultures throughout
history have speculated on the nature of the mind, soul, spirit. Starting in the 5th
century BC, mental disorders, especially those with psychotic traits, were
considered supernatural in origin. This view existed throughout ancient Greece and
Rome. Early manuals written about mental disorders were created by the Greeks.
In the 4th century BC, Hippocrates theorized that physiological abnormalities may
be the root of mental disorders.The first psychiatric hospitals were built in the
medieval Islamic world from the 8th century. The first was built in Baghdad in 705
AD, followed by Fes and Cairo.
In the 11th century, a Persian physician, Avicenna, recognized
"physiological psychology" in the treatment of illnesses involving
emotions.Avicenna was also an early pioneer of neuropsychiatry and first
described a number of neuropsychiatric conditions.
Psychology and psychiatry were related because their central problem was
the human mind.While one was trying tounderstand the human mind the other was
trying to cure the mind problems.Bouth psychiatry and psychology were interested
in the functions of the brain.

In conclusion, bouth are very related nowadays, one is trying to prevent and
to ameliorate, the other is trying to cure a disorder.
