ABSTRACT

The experiment is on purpose of determining the total suspended solid in water

and wastewater. The total suspended solid consists of inorganic and organic particles or
of immiscible liquids. Inorganic solids such as clay, silt, and other soil constituents are
common in surface water. Organic material such as plant fibers and biological solids
(algal cells, bacteria, etc.) are also common constituents of surface waters. These
materials are often natural contaminants resulting from the erosive action of water
flowing over surfaces. The method employed in this experiment. First step is to find the
weight of the filter paper and assemble the filtering apparatus. Wet the filter with small
volume of distilled water. Pipette 50 mL of water sample mixed to ensure homogeneity
onto centre of filter disk. Wash filter with three successive 10 mL volumes of distilled
water. Dry at least 1 hour and cool in desiccators to balance temperature and weigh.
Repeat the cycle of drying cooling desiccating and weighing until a constant weight is
obtained. The samples analyzed in these experiments are Industrial, Domestic and River.
The highest is industrial followed by river and domestic water. The value is in turbidity
value of mg/L. Total suspended solid is harmful to environmental because total
suspended solid is inimical to the livelihood of organism in the water.
