Task 2
Explain how the bones, skeletal muscles, tendons, and joints bring out movement in
the arm or leg. ( 10 marks )

1. Movement of the body are brought about by the contraction of a pair of

antagonistic muscles.

2. Energy for this contraction comes from ATP produced in the mitochondria in the
muscles.

3. Muscles which contract when receiving impulses from the brain are known as
voluntary muscles.

4. Muscles are attached to the bones by tendons.

5. At the joints, the bones are held together by ligaments, a strong, flexible, and
elastic connective tissue which allows two bones to be held together and permits
limited movement and,

6. At the same time, ensures that the bones do not become mal-aligned or dislocated.

7. Muscles can only contract, so at least two muscles must be used to move a bone
into a position and back again.

8. All skeletal muscles exist in pairs, and they act as antagonistic pairs, meaning
when one member of a pair of muscles contract, the other must relax.

9. When the biceps muscles contracts, the triceps muscle relaxes resulting in the arm
being bent.

10. Conversely, to straighten the arm, the triceps muscle contracts while the biceps
muscle relaxes.

EXTRA NOTES

All muscles have two primary proteins :

1. Actin
2. Myosin

If combined, they form ACTOMYOSIN,

which in presence of ATP, will contract.
