Chemical testing for drugs

Acetyl salicylic acid White powder Heat 0.05g of aspirin in 2ml

Heated in a dry testtube water for several minutes, cool
odour of acetic acid and add 3 drops of ferric
chloride – violet red color
Ibuprofen White crystalline powder Dissolve 0.2g in 4 ml ethanol;
dilute with 3 ml water. Add 0.2g
of sodium hydrogen carbonate
and pass the evolved gas into 1
ml of barium hydroxide –
solution becomes turbid
Paracetamol White crystalline powder Dissolve 0.1g in 10ml of water.
Add 1 drop of ferric chloride.
Violet blue colour
Ampicillin White crystalline powder Dissolve 5 mg in 1 ml water and
add 2 drops of ferric chloride –
yellowish colour
Chloroquine White powder To 10mg powder add 2 ml
sulphuric acid. No colour is
produced. Add 1 drop of
potassium dichromate –
brownish red colour
Dapsone Creamy white crystalline powder Dissolve 5mg in 2 ml HCl. Cool in
ice. Add 4 ml sodium nitrite;
wait 2 min. pour the mixture into
freshly prepared 2 nuphtrol
containing 1 g sodium acelate –
orange red precipitate
Ethambutol White powder Dissolve 5 mg in 5 ml water. Add
1 ml sodium hydroxide – dark
blue solution with violet tinge
Gentamicin White –cream powder To 5 mg, add 2 ml water. Add 5
drops of HCl and 5 drops of
BaCl2 – white ppt
Isoniazid White powder Dissolve 5 mg in 5 ml water; add
a mixture of silver nitrate and
ammonia. Bubbles of nitrogen
evolve and metallic silver is
produced as brownish black ppt
or bright metallic mirror
Rifampicin Brick red prowder Dissolve 1 mg in 3 ml water. Add
3 drops of copper sulphateand
heat to boiling. Violet colour is
produced
Tetracycline Yellow powder To 1 mg add 2 ml sulphuric acid
– red violet colour; add water,
 colour changes to yellow
Frusemide White powder Dissolve 25 mg in 2.5 ml ethanol.
Add 2 ml 4-dimethylamino
benzaldehyde drop by drop.
Transient green colour –
becomes deep red
Salbutamol White powder Dissolve 25 mg in 2 ml water.
Add 3 ml sulphuric acid and 3
drops potassium permanganage.
Purple colour is discharged
Prednisolone White powder Dissolve 2 mg in 1 ml phosphoric
acid and heat cautiously.
Solution turns yellow and then
reddish brown
Diazepam White powder To 10mg add 2 ml sulphuric acid
and heat onl a water bath for 3
min – yellow solution
