NON VERBAL

COMMUNICATION.
When one is pretending, the entire
body revolts.
• NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION IS ALL
THOSE MESSAGES EXPRESSED BY
OTHER THAN LINGUISTIC MEANS.

• NON VERBAL SIGNALS HAVE MORE


IMPACT IN CONVEYING MEANING
THAN VERBAL CONTENT.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION.
• 1)Non verbal messages primarily
communicate emotions, attitudes.

• 2)Non verbal cues substitute for,


contradict, emphasize or regulate verbal
messages.

• 3)Non verbal cues are often ambiguous.


• 4)Non verbal cues are continuous.

• 5)Non verbal cues are generally seen as


more reliable.

• 6)Non verbal cues are culture bound.


COMPONENTS OF
NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION.
• Components are divided into 3 main
areas:
• 1)PARALANGUAGE –the way we say
what we say.
• 2)KINESIS-the study of body language
and facial expressions.
• 3)PROXIMESIS- is the study of how
physical space is used.
PARALANGUAGE.
• HOW U SAY WHAT U SAY???
• Paralanguage has several component
parts:
• a) voice qualities: includes such things as
volume: speak loud to attract others
attention.
• Overly loud could be annoying.
• Soft voice: conveys a sense of weakness
or indecisiveness.
• Rate of speech:150 words /minute.
• Voice pitch: high pitch indicates
excitement or nervousness, low pitch
commands attention and respect.
• Rhythm: it refers to the pattern of voice.
• Pronunciation: correct oral delivery of
words.
• b) Voice qualifiers:temporary variations in
pitch,volume and rate of speech are
known as voice qualifiers.

• C)Vocal segregates:meaningless words or


sounds that are used to punctuate or pace
sentences.eg:ummmm…Errrrr…I mean….
KINESICS.
• It is the study of body movements and facial
expressions.
• a)Posture:it reveals a lot about attitudes and
emotions. It Portrays confidence,anxiety,fear
and a host of other emotions.
• b) Eyes: are considered most revealing.
• Eye contact is perceived as an indication of
honesty,confidence,openness and interest.
• People who avoid eye contact are usually
embarrassed or nervous.
PROXEMICS.
• It is the study of how people use the physical
space around them .
• People always put an invisible boundary
between themselves and others. this is called
personal feature space.
• 18 inch :intimate distance(close relations)
• 18in-4 ft:personal distance(friends,family)
• 4ft-12 ft:social zone(business transacted)
• 12-25ft:public distance zone(face2face basis)
