TABLING: a vital activity for student-activists

From If Americans Knew www.ifamericansknew.org

We find that rather than trying to bring too many speakers and
have too many events, it is much more important to organize a few
simple but excellent events that you promote effectively and widely
ahead of time, and that you then follow up with additional effective
activities.

In fact, before you bring people to speak, it is extremely valuable

to have an informational table on your campus and/or to distribute
fact sheets on the issue. This provides information to potentially
hundreds of students, and then creates interest when you do
decide to organize a speaking event. Such tabling/flyering should
be done as often as your resources permit – every day, once a
week; all year long, if possible (but with time out for exams!). Here
are some suggestions about how to do this:

Tabling / Distributing Materials:

This can be done on campuses, at Farmer’s Markets, outdoor
parks, at conferences and events, peace rallies, etc. If you don’t
have enough people or time to organize a table, just handing out This requires only two people and is very
informational, fact-filled flyers can be extremely valuable. effective.

people new to the issue. However, if you wish, you can have a can in
the middle with a sign saying something like: “All of our materials are
free – please help yourself! (Donations help us print more materials,
but are NOT required!).”

Verbally, you can reiterate that these really are free – that you want
people to read them!
