PROTOCOLS FOR THE USE OF ANTIBIOTICS IN DENTISTRY

ANTIVIRAL THERAPY :

1. Systemic
HERPETIC GINGIVOSTOMATITIS AND APHTOUS ULCERATION

Aciclovir – 200 mg / 5 times per day for 5 days for an adult

-for a child between 1 month -2 years half dose

- child > 2 years old –adult dose

2.Local

 Difflam ( benzydamine) – oromucosal spray 15% used every 1 ½- 3 hours for max 7 days
 Clorhexidine mouthwash – rinse mouth with 10 ml for 1 min twice daily
 Reccurent aphtous ulceration- Doxycyclin - the content of 100 mg capsule can be stirred
into a small amount of water the rinsed around the mouth for 2-3 minutes 4 times daily
usually for 3 days

ANTIFUNGAL THERAPY :

Nystatin - oral suspension 100 000 units /ml 4 times/ daily after food for 7 days

Fluconazole – 50 mg / daily for 7-14 days in fungal infections that do not respond to topical
therapy

PERIODONTAL DISEASE:

Periostat- low dose doxycyclin 20 mg as adjuvant for scale and root planning

ACUTE INFECTIONS ( PERIAPICAL ABSCESS –CELLULITIS OR PERIODONTAL ABSCESS ,


PERICORONATIS ( with trismus , swelling despite local treatment) , PERIODONTATIS, ACUTE
NECROSING ULCERATIVE GINGIVATIS
1. Amoxicillin- capsules 250 mg every 8 hours , doubled in severe infections, for 3 days ( 5
days if persistent)
- Child up to 10 years old- oral suspension 125 mg/ 5 ml for 3 or 5 days
2. Metronidazole - 200 mg tablets ( 400 mg if severe) for 3-5 days
- Child 1-3 years 50 mg every 8 hours
- Child 3-7 years 100 mg every 8 hours
- Child 7-10 years 100 mg evey 8 hours

SEVERE DENTAL INFECTIONS - cases not responding to standard antibiotics

Augmentin ( co- amoxiclav) - 250 mg ( 500 mg if very severe) every 8 hours for 5
days

PATIENTS ALLERGIC TO PENICILLIN ( products type amoxicillin) :

Erythromicin- gastroresistant tablets 250 mg – 500 mg every 6 hours for 5 days


- Child < 10 years old oral suspension 125 mg / 5 ml every 6 hours
