Outside cool air at 15°C and 40% relative humidity (aisdtream 1) is mixed with inside air taken neir

the ceiling at 32°C and 70% relative humidity (airstream 2). Determine the relative humidity and
temperature of the resultant airstream 3 if the outside flow rate is 40m³/min and the inside flow rate is
20 m³/min.

Solution
An energy and mass balance of the mixing of airstream 2 to produce airstream 3 would reveal the
following facts relative to the paychrometric chart:

State 3 lies on a straight line conneting state 1 and state 2.

The ratio of the distance 2-3 to the distance 3-1 is equal to ṁ a 1 / ṁ a 2.

Pa 1=P−Pv 1=100−1.7=98.3 kPa

Pa 2=P−Pv 2=100−4.8=9 5. 2 kPa

98.3
∴ ⍴a 1= =1.19 kg/m ³
(0.287)(288)

9 5 .2
∴ ⍴a 2= =1.0 9 kg/m ³
(0.287)(305)

kg
∴ ṁ a1 =( 40 ) ( 1.19 )=47.6
min

kg
∴ ṁ a 2=( 2 0 )( 1. 0 9 ) =21. 8
min

State 3 is located by the ratio d2-3 / d3-1 = ṁa 1 / ṁa 2 = 47.6 / 21.8 = 2.18, where d2-3 is the
distance from state 2 to state 3.

State 3 is positioned on the psynchrometric chart, and we find Ø = 63% and T3 = 20.2°C.
