ANSWERING TECHNIQUES

1. Describing graph.
You are expected to be able to describe the patterns shown by a graph.
You must refer to the two quantities on the axes of the graphs at all times.
a. Directly proportional graph
Proportional graphs form a straight line that passes through the origin.
Example :

b. Inversely proportional graph

Acceleration is inversely proportional to Mass

c. Linear graph
A linear graph forms a straight line that does not pass through the origin.

Force increases linearly to mass.

2. Finding gradient of the graph

Draw a triangle on the graph.

Size of the triangle should be
at least 8cm (height) x 8cm
(width)

Formula to find gradient, m :

y 2− y 1
x 2−x 1

3. Determining value from graph.

Example :

What is the value of v when M :

0.8.

Steps:

Draw a vertical line from M : 0.8

to the graph, and continue with a
horizontal line to y-axis to
determine value of v.

From the lines drawn on the

graph, we get value of v: 8.4cm
