Here is some information concerning the fourth tutorial.
Discussions will be based on the following four readings: (1) John Tomlinson, Globalization Disturbs Culture (2) Ulf Hannerz, The Global Ecumene (3) James L. Watson, McDonald's in Hong Kong (4) Tyler Cowen, How Hollywood Rules the World, and Whether We Should Care The questions for these readings are: (1) What does Tomlinson mean by the notion of deterritorializing culture? (2) What does popular culture teach us about global centre-periphery relations? (3) What does the "bush" and "beento" difference found by Hannerz in Nigeria stand for? (4) Think of four ways in which McDonald's (is supposed to have) changed Hong Kong. Are the changes for the better ("improvements") or for worse ("cultural imperialism")? (5) Assuming Hollywood has a major impact on global culture, what kind of culture does it impose on whom and to what effect? Does it disturb local cultures, and what are we to make of its effects?
