Describe the aims of three

national organisations involved in
sport
• The three national sporting organisations I am going to
be presenting about are…
About UK Sport…
• UK Sport is the strategic, lottery funded lead body for performance
sport in the UK.

•They invest around £100m a year in 1,200 athletes to deliver Olympic

and Paralympic success at London 2012 and beyond.

• Their ‘no compromise’ investment strategy was the driving force

behind Team GB’s incredible performances in Beijing 2008, finishing
4th in the Olympic Medal table, 2nd in the Paralympics.

• UK Sport is also responsible for strategically leading the nation’s

sporting international relations and increasing the influence of the UK in
the politics of sport internationally, and for driving international
development through sport.
What they do…
UK Sport’s aims are to underpin and unlock the nation’s Olympic and
Paralympic performance potential by…
1. Investing a significant majority of its income into the World Class
Performance Programme, and working closely with the national
governing bodies of sport to ensure they operate as effectively as
possible
2. Working with partners to develop the people and systems that support
leading athletes, especially in the areas of coaching, talent identification
, sports science, medicine practitioners and Performance Lifestyle
3. Seeking cutting edge research and innovative solutions to performance
challenges
What they do…

• UK Sport also leads the campaign to bring strategically important major

sporting events to the UK.
• Working with national governing bodies, cities and regions and home
country agencies, they invest around £4m every year to attract and stage
significant events primarily of World and European status.
• They also work with governing bodies and other partner organisations to
help them build positive working relationships with International
Federations and sporting bodies.
Sports Council Wales
• Sport Wales is the national organisation responsible for
developing and promoting sport and physical activity in Wales.
• They are responsible for distributing National Lottery funds to both
elite and grassroots sport in Wales.
•Working with partners, they ensure that the delivery and
development of sport at both a national and local level provides the
people of Wales with every opportunity to excel at their sport of
choice.
‘Sport For All’…

Sport wales encourages sport for everyone though a number of different

schemes…

•Dragon Sport, 5x60 and PE & School Sport are all aimed at improving not only
the quantity but the quality of sports provision to young people.

•Disability Sport Wales - a pan-disability sport organisation which aims to provide

and promote quality sporting and physical activity opportunities for disabled
people in Wales.

•Free Swimming - offers free swimming opportunities for all young people under
16 years of age, as well as those over 60.

•Young Ambassadors - recognises and rewards committed sports leaders in

schools and communities and provides skills training such as leadership &
communication.
• Dragon Sport is a Sport Wales initiative funded by the National Lottery,
designed to offer 7-11 year olds fun and enjoyable sporting
opportunities.

• Linking closely with schools and community sports clubs, Dragon Sport
is making a dramatic impact on sports participation by encouraging
children to become involved in a variety of organised sporting activities
such as small sided games of rugby, football, tennis and more…

• Dragon Sport introduces children to coaching, skill development and

appropriate competition using versions of the adult game, modified to
meet their needs and skill levels.
• 5x60 aims to create the environment necessary for secondary school aged
children to take part in extra curricular sport and physical activity on a
regular basis.

• This is carried out by a host of arranged activities taking place before school,
at lunch time, after school and at the weekends.

• Activities range from the usual football and rugby to mountain biking and
surfing.
