Recording an
album is always
something of an
adventure for inde-
pendent bands.
When you're tak-
ing the do-it your-
self, home-record-
ing route like local
group Nasty Bingo did, you have to
be prepared for anything.
Victoria Baumgardner (vocal, i
tar, mandolin, gong, conga), her hus
band, Brian (uitar, banjo, whistle,
hambone, snare drum) and band:
mates Matt Byanski (vocal, kaz00,
percussion) and Brian Rudduck
(bass, piano, synth, kick drum),
recorded their new album at their
practice space in the basement of the
Baumgardner's East Dayton home.
‘The comfortable environment was
the perfect setting for a hassle-free
recording experience
“It was nice to be able to take our
time recording,” Rudduck said. “AIL

the bands I've been in, you've only
got so much money, so you go into
the studio, bust out a few tracks and
pick the best ones. Doing it here we
actually experimented. We came up
with stuff to change the songs and
re-crafted some of them.”
“It was fun to experiment,” Vie-
toria Baumgardner said. “The big
thing is we don't really have egos.
We're all kind of laid back about
things, and we each bring our own
thing to it. We just let each other do
whatever and if it sounds bad we'll
say, ‘Hey,’ but that doesn't usually
happen.”
The home recording session began
in January 2009, and the musicians
took their time crafting a fittingly
intimate acoustic-pop rock. However
the project was further delayed by a
series of technical issues.
“We had the raw tracks done for six
songs, and then the computer crashed
in the spring,” Byanski said, “It took
us another couple of months to get
up and running again, It was fortu-
nate though, because we wrote anoth-
cer song, and we brought back anoth-
cer song we had done. We had more
material, and we were more comfort-
able with it, soit was kind of a bless-
ing, really that it happened that way.”
“Then we thought we lost it a
‘ond time,” Brian Baumgardner said
His bandmates all groan in unison.
“We were all like, ‘I don't know if
want to do this again.’ Luckily we
were able to find it, and now we back
everything up.”
Alter an extended delay, the mem
bers of Nasty Bingo are pleased to be
able to celebrate the release of their
selftitled debut at South Park Tavern
‘on Friday, Nov. 19.
“It sucked to have to do it all
again,” Victoria Baumgardner said,
“But even if it took us two more
years, we didn’t care as long as we
had something we were proud of.”
