Application Process
The journalism major is impacted. This means that the department has more
applicants than resources to meet the demand of all of its majors. For that
reason the department is beginning an admissions process that caps the number of
new majors. Each year we will cap new enrollments based on the department's
actual capacity. This will allow us to better meet the needs of current majors.
Any student interested in becoming a major will have to apply to the program
with a supplemental admissions application. This includes current SF State
students who want to change their major to journalism and prospective students
(freshmen or community college transfers) who plan to apply to the university
for admission. Admission is only for the fall semester. All students interested
in the journalism program can apply during the application period, Oct. 1-Nov.
30. If you get into the program you will be eligible to take journalism courses
starting the following Fall semester. Applications will be available on the
Journalism Department Web site at www.journalism.sfsu.edu once the application
period opens. The department will be looking at GPA, prior experience on student
or professional publications, community service, participation in the Bay Area
Multicultural Media Academy, language abilities other than English,
qualification for financial assistance and Educational Opportunities Program,
and critical thinking and writing ability on a 500-word journalism essay.

This means that more qualified applicants apply than can be accepted into the
major. All applicants to the nursing Bachelor of Science program must apply for
admission between October 1 and November 30 for the subsequent academic year. In
order to meet eligibility requirements, prospective students must have a
cumulative college GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of application. Applicants
will be rank ordered and evaluated for admission to the major based on GPA in
the prerequisite courses, TEAS V score, and the following supplemental criteria:
Freshmen applicants are ineligible for the nursing major. Prospective freshman
applicants can select Undeclared with an Interest in Nursing or an alternate
major on the CSU application for admission. Please note that the Undeclared
with an Interest in Nursing designation does not guarantee admission to the
nursing major. All applicants must take courses comparable to the prerequisite
courses listed on this report. Current SF State students interested in the
nursing major should obtain advisement from the Undergraduate Advising Center or
the Student Resource Center in the College of Health and Human Services.
Transfer students should contact an academic advisor at their current school or
visit the SF State School of Nursing web site.
No more than one prerequisite course can be in progress during the spring
semester or winter quarter after submitting the School of Nursing application.
All prerequisite courses must be completed no later than the end of the spring
semester or winter quarter after the School of Nursing application has been
submitted. Qualified students who are admitted to the nursing major are
randomly assigned to begin nursing courses in either the fall or spring
semester.
Students admitted to the major must take the required nursing courses, complete
University General Education and graduation requirements, and take a course in
sociology or anthropology as it is required for RN licensure in the State of
California.

Psychology Department.
Applications for impacted programs must be submitted between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30
for the following fall. Applications are accepted for fall semesters only.
There are no spring admissions. Applications from first-time freshman are not
accepted.
Applicants must first meet the general university requirements pertaining to the
admission of undergraduate students. Admission into the School of Social Work
requires submission of two separate applications. Prospective students must be
admitted into San Francisco State University Undergraduate Studies and the
School of Social Work. A complete admission application to the School of Social
Work's Baccalaureate Program can be accessed through the School?s website at:
http://socwork.sfsu.edu/BASW.aspx.
Students are admitted as a cohort group each fall semester only. As a cohort
group, students typically begin and end the program at the same time. Prior to
entering the program, they are expected to have completed all General Education
(GE) requirements, and to have junior standing. Students attend full-time, and
are expected to complete the BASW degree in two years.
Students are required to maintain a C minimum grade in all courses within the
major. Students not maintaining this average will be dropped from the social
work program.
